I am only a week into this hobby and was searching a penny roll and found this 1950 with some strange shiny surface on it. It is probably corrosion, but it looks strange so i though I'd post a pic. Also there is a shiny smooth surface in between N and E. I now this would not be strange on a zinc penny, but it is a wheat penny. I don't know much about coins so feel free to state the obvious and correct me! Any suggestions about what it is are greatly appreciated.
Looks like some sort of gunk on the coin. It would likely come off with an acetone bath, but it’s really not worth the effort.
Any damage after a coin leaves the mint is just damage. Takes all the collectibility away. Save it for reference after you learn more. Welcome to Coin Talk

When I was a kid people put cents on their car batteries to draw corrosion away from the post and cables(?) Used to come across a lot of acid corroded and damaged cents.
Welcome to an interesting hobby and chat. It looks like something attached to your coin, solder maybe? Some folks like to make things with cents. What makes a coin collectible depends on what you like. The best money display I have seen at a coin show was Burned Money. That display had charred paper money and coins that fused together due to the heat of a fire. None of the items had number grades. I think you should put that cent somewhere so you can say it was one of your first finds.

Well welcome to CT. Lots of great people here. I would highly suggest going through archives and just reading. The more you know, the better this hobby is! If you don't have any books yet, most libraries have a copy of the Redbook, a guide on US coins. Very helpful reading.
