Acetone Improved 64 Kennedy

I had to go to Home Depot to get a new faucet for my kitchen so I grabbed some Acetone there. I thought this would be an easy dip and go thing but I actually had to leave it in the acetone longer than I thought. I didn't want to overdo it, so I put in it, checked it in about 5 minutes, rinsed and still saw lots and lots of yuck. I wiped off what had loosened but all in all, it took about 30 minutes of soaking and wiping to get this coin to look and feel pretty darn good. It looks far better in hand than magnifying in a scan but it's a beauty now for sure. This "beautiful" 64 is no longer an ugly duckling and can join the other 90% halves in the baggie in the safe

I really have no idea how this got so full of yuck that felt and looked like glue but whoever rolled those halves, thought it was ugly enough to give away. Of course I saw beauty in this 90% half dollar the moment I saw it but I just needed to bring out its inner beauty to the outside...hehe

I'm pretty sure acetone is fairly harmless to coins, so you can leave them submerged for quite sometime. I have found that most silver and clad coins are unaffected by this submersion, but copper will start to oxidize quickly if not dried quickly and properly.

Good or bad, I've gotten into the habit of letting them soak in an olive oil overnight to prevent this.

 

Phoenix, As I scrolled down this thread, I realized you beat me to the punch line on this one. However if the coin is sent to GEC then it definitely be graded a MS 70 CAM

Hot distilled water. The oil is preferable to the alternative (they were already being eaten by PVC residue or corrosion) and these coins are circulated or damaged to begin with, so I'm not too concerned. I'd never do that to undamaged coins on a whim.

Oh, and if that doesn't work, I use Ajax and a Brillo pad.

 

and if is real bad send it off to billy mays and he'll sandblast it with oxyclean
