i like this coin, and am considering it. Please guess the grade, and feel free to be honest about the reverse toning.
Lovely coin Dave.........I can see why you are considering it. Might have spent some time in one of those 'sulfur ridden' albums which would account for the toning only appearing on one side. My initial feeling is it's a '65, but I think I'm wrong and the DR. (Franklin) grades out at '66...........
I don't know from a distance the first thing that struck me was a lack of mint luster. Maybe just the lighting but just seems off. AU58 nice toning...
The surfaces look clean enough for a gem grade but this coin appears to have the typical impaired luster as is so common on deeply toned 1958 mint set Franklins. My guess is that PCGS graded the coin MS64+
On a small screen, the subdued luster made me think MS-64. The contact marks looks closer to MS-66, but the requisite luster is not there. My grade would be MS-65. The toning is completely natural
I see a thick natural toning. And would guess that the luster is there. Very minor contact marks and a beautiful coin. MS66
It is a 66. Was thinking about it, and offered the seller 65 money, which he took. Don’t have the coin in hand, but I suspect the subdued luster is as a result of the album, or mint set holder in which it was stored. I have a number of “Blue Grape” toned coins, and they are usually more attractive in hand.
Now why would someone color just the one side like that? Buy the thing, already. A couple little dings on the neck is all that's wrong with it. I'm good with the old boy in MS65.
Would not surprise me. True Views do not always show luster in a particularly flattering light. I will post pictures when it arrives.
I've got a 1955, and both sides look like that reverse. Nearly impossible to capture the luster, but cartwheeling like crazy on it.
I have a 1948 like that. A “Blue meanie” MS 65 FBL. Looks like it has no luster, as the toning is thick, but attractive. I’ve posted it a few times.
