I've seen this treatment before but didn't pay much attention. Now these two appear in my hoard...I have no recollection of acquisition.

Very different treatment of the plating, and other fine details; two different artists, methinks. I suspect laser work, but it's an open question how the cutting was done.

Probably CuNi or Bronze...what year, and denomination?

The next post will have rim-shots that show a legend. Thanks! wlw

Here are pics of the rim of one of the coins...I'll stick my neck out and assume both coins are identical in this respect.

    What is the translation? Thanks...wlw

Those are coins from Germany/Federal Republic 5 mark denomination. They look gold plated too. The dates are under the 5 on the opposite side of the eagle. Has a date run from 1951-1974. Made from .625 silver. Both your coins have a "D" mint mark.

I think the screaming eagle design is amazing.

Remarkable, to me, is the spirit of post-war Germany epitomized by that Eagle! Not even a decade after an ignominious defeat, a German artist envisioned the future of the homeland so eloquently in the design of that bird...Magnificent! Thanks! wlw

You see the "cut out" coins made in to pendants on Ebay ranging from $50-100.
