Ancient Greeks, mostly during 4th.Century BC, struck tiny silver coins named Oboles, to meet the needs of small change. The tradition expects these coins to be used for the deads to pay Charon to cross the river Styx to lead them to rest. These tiny coins (about 11cm.diameter/0,66gr.) represent old mythological legends or local symbols, the meaning of which is often forgotten nowadays. In order not to get lost, these Oboles were deemed to be carried by the Greeks in their mouth. Here are two more examples of such charming little coins. Can we see yours ?
