I agree - the contrasting colors are quite beautiful. I have one of the same ("Anonna") type but with a bust type that is common on later Elagabalus sestertii, but only appears in medallions on Septimius sestertii. I have come across only one other with the bust type on my coin (which I now have to post!), and it is a die match of the one I have.

It is why I enjoy collecting coins of Septimius - every time I think I have learned all there is to know about his coins something new comes up - it was great to find out that his "DIVI" coins were struck celebrating being the son of Marcus Aurelius (one Senator congratulated Septimius on discovering his father or similar words - that took courage!).

I have not had the same enjoyment with the coins of any other emperor, although I am sure that there are mysteries left to be solved for any series. I think if I could afford it I would collect Hadrian as well - his sestertii are wonderful, especially the travel series. But expensive too!

Although a few years later than the OP, I just got this dupondius this past weekend at a show:

Beautiful! I had no idea these were available with this bust type - this must be one of those weird coincidences, since I saw one of these for sale on ebay recently as well - and I had never seen one before anywhere, ever.

They are not rare but not common either. Scarce may be appropriate, but they are still modestly available, usually under $100.

I wish you every luck in your interesting collection. I think that this is the only bronze coin of Septimius Severus which I have. I picked it up from my old folders. Reverse shows the sacred stone of Zeus. S Sever O Stone Zeus.JPG S Sever R sacred Piera.JPG

I have wondered about this sacred stone since it bears such a close resemblance to the stone Elagabalus dragged into Rome. I have also wondered what became of it - was it hastened back to the east? Tossed into the Tiber?

It will join the menorah that Titus brought to Rome from Jerusalem, the final resting place of Attila and other unsolved mysteries. Actually I have always wondered why no one has ever searched for the tomb of Atilla - we know it is in a river or stream. Should be able to use some underwater metal detector or something to find it. If the ancient writings are correct Atllla was buried with quite a treasure!

As for Septimius- I have 33 different sestertii - need only 67 more. The coins between 201 to 208 are next to impossible to find and cost quite a bit. But I am going to make a run for it!

Actually I have 11 of 35 sestertii of Elagabalus - that might be easier! (But much less fun) Blake

Beautiful coins - the Three Moneta IMP IIII is extremely hard to find, IMP III is almost common in comparison.
