I found this recently and was wondering what is the name of this error? I was sorting through a few hundred dollars in cents and rolled it up thinking it was just another painted coin. A few days later I saw one like it online and decided I better save this coin. So I spent several hours searching rolls until I found it again. The brightest photos appear to show a grayish coating, while the darker photos appear more bluish purple. So was it worth my time?
Based on your photos, the copper plating has been partially removed. It is not struck on an unplated zinc planchet.
Hi welcome to ct! Imho, I agree with @Fred Weinberg . Looks like someone polished the inside for a while.
I don’t know, so I welcome all opinions. I was comparing this to other images of incomplete plating. The odd thing I see is the zinc is exposed in the middle and the rim plating is intact. I’ve seen similar examples on other forums, with no certain explanation. I’ve also found similar images on eBay, but that doesn’t mean it’s a real error. Until I know for sure that it is post mint damage, I will keep it, just in case it turns out to be a real error.
Imho, Lol, I’m sorry to say it is not an error. But if you want to keep it put it in a 2x2 , frame it for good luck and don’t forget to brag to all your friends and family how you found an awesome Error one of a kind, sort of. I’m sorry but if you can’t take @Fred Weinberg s word for it. Than I can’t help you.
