What do you think about this 1834 classic head quarter eagle?

  1. Something is off on this 1834 classic head quarter eagle...

It is too big for a capital 2.50 holder

    Slightly bigger than 18 mm

PCGS says it should be 17.55 mm so it should slip through the capital holder.

Weight 4.1 on a scale that measures within tolerance but limit is .1 gram

    Is it counterfeit?

I wondered if it may have been struck on the wrong planchette? Have any of you run into this before?

    It has no magnetic attraction.

    Appreciate your thoughts

  3. Nevermind. NGC and others have the diameter listed as 18.2 mm which explains why it doesn't fit in a regular 18 mm capitol holder. PCGS had it listed as 17.5 mm which is in error.

This is the correct information. The Classic Head Quarter Eagles are slightly wider than the Liberty Heads which came later. I learned that when I decided to put a Classic Head $2.50 in the slot for the Philadelphia Mint coin in a Capital Plastics all mints quarter eagle holder many years ago. I had to make the hole bigger.

Here is a certified piece you can use to compare with your coin.

  8. I bored out a capital holder to fit. Thanks

If you find that you need to increase the size of Capital Plastic holder openings on a regular basis, they sell a great tool for doing that.
