It was the third Sunday of April of 2011 when I began my journey into ancient coin collecting. I was 19 and had recently become more interested in Roman history, more specifically the late empire and the fall of the west. I was still collecting US coins at the time and I had found out about the Ft Lauderdale coin club show in my area. I decided to go. I knew practically nothing about ancient coins, so I was hoping, but not expecting, to find an affordable ancient coin, but by and large this was a US coin hunting expedition. To my surprise I walked away with not one, but two Roman coins. Naturally I was very excited. They were your typical later Roman bronzes, some I'm sure wouldn't bat an eye towards, but they were (and still are) special, and they were mine. Immediately I researched them, and made the decision to go back the next month to buy more ancient coins. Overall I'm highly satisfied with how I did these past eight years, and there have certainly been acquisitions I was very surprised to have had the good fortune of acquiring in my relatively short collecting career. My interest in and knowledge of ancient and medieval history have increased exponentially, and I've made some awesome coin-friends along the way. I can only dream about what the next eight years will hold. I know for a fact that this year will mark a huge milestone, the first time I meet some of you in person, for I will be in attendance at FUN this summer. Thanks for reading, and may Fortuna smile on all our collections.
What a great story and journey! I'm glad you stuck with it. My anniversary has passed (March 2003). I was very excited to find Roman coins for sale online! I still have that first purchase - a Vespasian denarius from the defunct website Old Roman Coins (Henri Delger). My interest in Flavian history pre-dates my interest in the coinage!
I predict you will celebrate your eightieth anniversary in the hobby and I hope, then, you will have a good group of friends on Coin Talk to help you remember. You have been a valuable asset to this group in the time you have been with us. Thank you for sharing what you have learned.
Happy Anniversary, VK! Getting to know you has been a pleasure. Here's to many more enjoyable years in the hobby
You have come a long way in your 8 years. I like your collection focus. It is an interesting and somewhat mysterious time in history. Keep it going! John
A big thanks to the wonderful comments and likes, and it's been an awesome pleasure to know you guys as well. Certainly cannot ignore or minimize all the help I've gotten throughout the years from you guys here on CT and elsewhere; not to mention you all have made this a much less lonely pursuit. I still cannot believe its already been nearly a decade since I started collecting Ancients. While late Romans/early medieval are my true passion, I feel fortunate to have been able to expand my interests to other areas including Greek and Islamic coinage. I think I'm doing this now as opposed to just waiting a couple more years to 10 is that I've never really commemorated my collecting anniversary before. Think I might have just forgotten to/never noticed each year. But this time I did, and I wanted to do this a couple of weeks ago but things just got too busy.
Happy 8 year collecting anniversary VK! Here are the traditional gifts for the 8 year anniversary. Anniversary Year/Traditional Gift Theme Modern Gift Theme 8th year: Bronze; Pottery (US) Salt (UK) Linen; Lace Treat yourself to a big ol' sweet AE coin! Or some salt. Or some linen and lace if you're into that, chrsmat71 don't judge. I started almost 8 years ago as well, I don't remember when exactly, but it was 2011 when I picked this Arcadius LRB up off ebay.
Nice story and congratulations with the anniversary. I dont remember it to the date when i started collecting, and funny enough it started with a friend who brought a nice coin from his trip to Rome. After that some time with little activite. But i picked it up after my wife and i went to Rome in april 2015. It has been a few years now. I consider those my real collecting years. Since then regretting some coins purchases in retrospective and still being happy with most. Guess it is part of the hobby.
Congrats VK. I never paid attention to the month I started, but it was sometime in late 2009 because my first Forvm purchase was days after new years of 2010 so I know x-mas money went to a domna & valentinian.
VK. Eight years Happy Hunting - not bad ! I've even seen that number eight, with no beginning and no end, represents eternity ! Imagine an eternity of coin hunting !!!
Congratulations on 8 years! This June I'll hit 4 years of ancient collecting. Here's a Valens for your thread:
