    Greetings,

I have come across what I believe may be an elusive 1961 Franklin Proof DDR.

My local dealer is out of town at the Phoenix coin show so I thought maybee someone on the forum could help me.

The back of the coin appears to be mostly normal when compared to any other proof Franklin. The only 2 noticible differences appear to be:

#1 - The "E Pluribus Unum" and the 2 dots are heavily frosted and 2 to 3 times larger than on a normal proof. When you look at the coin at an angle you can clearly see that the letters are not "crisp" as on a normal franklin and in fact the E seems very large especially the | portion, on the word Pluribus the P is much larger and the other letters are crammed together almost touching each other.

#2 -All of the other letters on the back are much thicker than on a normal Franklin.

I have attached a scan and not sure if it will help or not. Any questions/comments would be appreciated.

I would love to try and help you, but the pics are just too small for me to see what you are talking about.

We need a close up on the PUP (pick up point) of the EPU and the dot to be sure.

Your probably hoping for an FS 801 DR. You may have a 1961 DR F'S 803. It's more common.

I would think that the upstanding PNCS wold have detected this error but they were probably too busy cracking Au & low MS & PF coins from slabs and elevating their status to a 69 or 70 grade. They may have overlooked the not too obvious DDR.
You should post a close up of the reverse and the obverse for any possibility of anyone here at CT to be able to come up with a grade or 2.

As mentioned above, there is NO way to tell from an image that size. You need to take some close up pics.
