Whats going on everyone, hope all is well. So its been awhile since I ve been on here but wanted to update you on a 1974 Philly mint penny that is attracted to a magnet. If its a strong magnet it will snatch it off the table. Small size will pull it up . Had it scanned and the results are below.. AU-NI, and NI-CU. The thin layer of gold i had stripped off. Yes, it is still attracted to a magnet.
Nickel (NI) is magnetic. Your coin is copper (CU) and was plated with nickel (NI) and then gold (AU). at sometime during that process, it was counter marked with an outline of Mississippi. Your coin did not come out of the coining press in that condition. You have not found the holy grail.
It was probably sold for a slight premium as a souvenir, and, being damaged, it's numismatic value would be compromised. However, the coin is so common, it wouldn't make a difference.
