I have about a dozen that I bought while researching the article. Here is one of the best: Thibault III Poey d'Avant 5978. Rabbi Shlomo Itzak known by his monogram, RASHI. Champagne was a home to Jewish scholarship. Note that the Arthurian Legends were composed by Chretian of Champagne. Somewhat odd, you know, to call yourself "Christian" in a county of, well, Christians, unless, maybe there was another story there...
After reading the OP by @FitzNigel I added a denaro provisino from the Roman Senate to my want list of non-English medieval European coins. The stars finally aligned and I pulled the trigger on one that was fairly inexpensive on Vcoins. Thanks FitzNigel for inspiring me to add new coins to my collection and expanding my interests. Despite what Mrs. TheRed thinks ( "it might be the ugliest coin in your collection") I'm really pleased to have added it.
It seems I'm bringing back this thread in which nothing has been posted since March 2021 - that's a long time I'm back struggling with medievals...They really wrote cryptic legends, very difficult to read. Can someone please tell if this is a Denier from Count Thibaut II of Champagne? The coin came without any note and I've not been able to measure it. Will do it soon.
Thanks to this excellent old thread at https://www.cointalk.com/threads/al...nt-gilles-and-the-call-of-the-crusade.343764/ posted by CT member seth77, I was able to attribute this medieval coin. I haven't been able to find it anywhere else on the web, and I have been trying to find it for many many hours before I found it here (should have starting looking here and not elsewhere... Thank you so much seth77, I am very grateful. My article for the November 2009 Celetor is archived on VCoins (as is the entire run of the magazine). See here: https://social.vcoins.com/files/file/273-vol-23-no-11-november-2009/ From that article: Thanks, Mike M.
Thank you very much Mike. After some small issues with VCoins saying that I don't have permission to download, I started again and it worked. Just downloaded it and will read your article
