Great thing is - these coins are readily available! So if you missed the boat, it's easy to find another.
I have watched these giveaways that some members were generous enough to host and, although I did not intervene in any threads regarding, I've always thought about how much (or rather little) people appreciate what they get for free by the generosity of others, while they try to deconstruct that generosity, looking to find "deception" or "rudeness" behind it. As long as this is a public forum and there is literally no way other than a prolonged interaction to learn and get familiar to one another, I am afraid that trolls and arrogant grifters are inevitable.
What a generous motion @Sallent! Sorry to hear that a little grief came your way over something as silly as a free gift.
That is why good people can't do good things. Sorry this happened. You are doing something you don't have to do an some people can't understand that?
Several of us have discovered that selling coins we have outgrown is difficult but here we have further proof that giving them away may be just as hard. When I was selling some of mine a couple years ago, I was turned down when offering some free to a newby poster here. I realize I am just as bad since I recently declined a gift of sale catalogs offered by a friend. I guess we all want what we want and we don't all want LRB's or books to add to the boxes we already have. It leaves the question of what we are to do with our surpluses. The postal costs make many old books/catalogs worthless. The desire of some to start with MS71 slabs makes it hard even to give away the coins that once meant more to us than they do now. I have no answer.
Wow! That’s awesome of you! Wish I would have seen this sooner..I’ve been trying to figure out a way to get into these. Next time maybe
To a point, people starting out like me in ancients will really accept any ancient coin to study! I've had multiple people send me free coins and I am very appreciative of them!
I'm sorry to hear the misfortune, I again want to say thank you for the opportunity and your generosity!
I would like to apologise to @Tlberg and @CoinBlazer . I just got back from the post office. I'm afraid I didn't keep my word. I originally said I'd send you one or two coins, but in the end I went crazy and sent you guys 6-7 coins a piece, staring from the 3rd Century BCE to the 4rth Century CE. Hope you guys are not too disappointed at receiving a larger coin shipment than you were expecting. Enjoy! You know what they say, "Go big or go home."
I'm with furryfrog02 on this one. We do like to see participation here and your posting what it is that you found interesting (and why) does a lot more to encourage people here to give coins than would be the case if we saw the coins offered for sale on eBay next week (who remembers that incident?). Giveaways are a problem in several respects. Many people don't fill out the information on the CT registration page but I suspect some would get more if we knew that you were a new collector or YN (under 40 by some standards) who lives where postage on the giveaway would be reasonable instead of a professional dealer across the globe currently offering a thousand junk lots on eBay. I'm not saying we don't like lurkers but we do like participating beginners better. Not only do I hope you like what you get from Sallent but I hope you will consider giving a new collector something similar when you have been doing this a decade (or several).
@dougsmit That's why I expressed my frustrations. It became clear right away that two of the "newbies" had simply opened an account in this forum just to get a free coin, and had no history whatsoever. One of them PMd me and after reading his comments, red flags went off in my head. I got the "this coin is going to be on eBay this Saturday" vibe from him. That's why I would suggest in the future limiting the contest and or giveaways to people with at least 100+ posts and at least a month on Cointalk. And yes, I'd love it if the two recipients would share their coins with the rest of the community and give some feedback as to the coins. Not because I want any credit (I don't really care about that sort of thing) but rather for the benefit of other newbies who might learn and be inspired by seeing such threads and learn about good beginner coins to start their collecting journey. When I was first starting out, some members sent me coins. I learned a lot from them. As my collection grew, I was happy to pass them along to the next newbie in the hope they too learn something.
I used to give away a lot of coins here a couple years back. I became somewhat jaded when I started seeing them pop up on Ebay. Sometimes its hard to be the 'nice guy'.
Nice that you are giving away so many coins @Sallent - some definite generosity there. And I'm sorry there were a few hiccups with the giveaway.
Those are three nice looking LRB coins @Sallent , cool move! I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of the coins you all got winners!
Your package was waiting for me after work yesterday. Thank You again @Sallent ! First thing I'm going to do is google how to care for "Ancient Coins" so I don't ruin them.
