Yeah Mike my plan is accumulate enough euros from coin star finds....to pay for an European Vacation! Write a paper back book on how to see Europe on 20 euros a day...I've even got a cover picked out.....an photo of me wearing cargo pants pockets bulging filled with euros ....;)

Sure, there are always some exceptions, but they are pretty large outliers, the pocket change equivalent of winning the lottery. One can spend a lifetime searching through coins and never find any of these treasures. But yes, it's possible, though, for the vast majority of people, highly unlikely.

About 7000 were issued for circulation before they noticed the mistake. Considering the montages are in the millions, I agree, it’s unlikely. Still I’ll have a closer look at the cents now :)

What is this? I haven't been to Europe since 2002, and we find very few Euro coins here in the Deep South. (Once while bicycling I found a few someone had thrown to the side of the road. So the only one's I've collected lately from "circulation" are road kill.)

I collect them to the extent that I collect all world coins: by date, and paying either bulk prices for the low FV ones or a maximum face value for the higher FV coins. I've built up a pretty decent sized collection of them for well under face value.

I have a collection of 2 euros for each EU country (first year issue), collecting the special German "state" commemorative 2 euros, and have most of the "pattern" or test coins from the EU and even non-EU countries. Nice to look at but not very exciting.

The bi metals and the brassy looking 50c/20c/10c coins are all cool to have.

When I first started my coin collecting I always had a thing for the larger coin denomination from countries like Switzerland (5 and 2 Franc), Canada ($2), Euro (€2) and wondered how cool it would be if the US ever did a $2 coin. I always enjoyed the bi metals I came across worldwide. Fun to collect.

Also the ¥500 Yen has been one of my favorite currently exchangeable world coins for some time now. It's amazing how much money you can have in basic pocket change in Japan. At one point they had a value of over $6 USD.

About the same here - I am in DE, close to NL and BE, use those coins every day, and have been collecting them for a long time. (In case anybody cares, this year is the 20th anniversary of the euro as a currency; the cash came a little later.) For me the question "How do we feel about collecting Euros?" sounds a little silly ;) or rather directed at collectors in non-euro countries only ...

Euros are my favorite sandwich! However, I'm not very good at collecting them as I eat them. We have a great greek place in Albany, Athos Restaurant.

I collect the Austria 25 Euro silver/Niobium bimetallic coins only. I don't usually like NCLT coins, and I don't think the Euro will exist in 10 years.

Oh well, some people have been claiming that for 20 years. ;) Sure, the EU in its current state would not be capable of creating a common currency, but the euro started in better times and is still around. As for the future, who knows - will I be around next week or in ten years?

Those Austrian €25 pieces (NC, and "LT" only in the issuing member state) I stopped collecting when they went from two colors to that multicolored appearance. Same with most other pieces that are issued as collector coins; I do not find them that attractive. (Sure, I do get the German €20 silver pieces that are issued at face, or those Cu-Ni issues with the built-in polymer ring, and some others that I think are interesting.)

With the circulation issues and the commemorative €2 coins that is a little different; those are coins that can actually be (and are) used in the entire currency union. Unfortunately some mints, even BE and FR, have begun selling them in coincards only, instead of also issuing them in rolls. Booh.

By modern coinage standards, I think the €2 commemoratives are a rather nice series, particularly the German landmark commems. I'm hoping to find a few more when I'm there in June. I'd really like to add the one that features Neuschwanstein Castle, although that's a 2012 issue so finding it in uncirculated condition is unlikely. I'll probably have to buy one.

By the way, what do you mean by 'coincards'?

A coincard is basically a nice thing - you get the coin in a (usually credit card sized) nicely designed "sleeve" which has some info about the occasion. Problem is, at least in my opinion, that some issues come in such special and surcharged versions only.

Belgium for example issues two commemorative €2 coins this year. This is the Bruegel coin; mintage 150,000 (BU coincard only, plus 5,000 proof pieces). Same figures for the other piece, dedicated to the European Monetary Institute, the predecessor of the European Central Bank. The EMI was founded 25 years ago.

France issues one €2 commem dedicated to the fall of the Berlin Wall 30 years ago - another French-German joint issue, both versions have basically the same design. Mintages will be 30 million (DE) and 10 million (FR) - and yes, these coins are issued for circulation too. However, the second French €2 commem, featuring Asterix (created 60 years ago), can only be had in coincards. Three different ones, 100,000 pieces each, and surcharged of course.

Yes, the four small countries that are not EU members but can issue euro coins have always done that. ;) But it was easier to ignore them, hehe. Now you have to decide - do I want all €2 commems from the member states, even if that means paying more, or do I buy only those that can (at least theoretically) be had at face?
