Actually, it's my first gold non-commemorative coin. I turned 25 this past weekend and my dad surprised me with a 1911 $2 1/2 Indian. I would say it's EF or maybe a hard AU. It's beautiful though. Now, I'm wanting to make a move to an eagle or even a double eagle. It may be a while, but it'll be a fun search.
Anyone have any cool stories of their first gold coins?

    Great gift, and happy birthday!

I recently just purchased my second gold coin (a 1908 Austrian 10 corona), but my first was a 1945 Mexican 2 peso restrike. I think my next will be a 1955 Mexican 5 peso restrike. I'd love to own some U.S. gold, but they cost so much more than melt...can't really do it.

Either way, it's exciting finally having your first gold coin. I know I can't stop looking at the two I have.

Gold is $938.50 today, so a double eagle $20 has about $900 melt value. $10 Eagles have about $450 melt.

Common date $20 Saints, MS64 (PCGS and NGC), can be had for $1100 on E-bay - about 20% over melt. Not too shabby.

Similar story with $10 Libbies in MS62. Running $550 or so.

One might pay a little more for choice picks at a show, but you can find nice coins in those grades - particularly the Saints.

Fantastic ! I bet that was a thrill. Way to go, Dad !

My first gold coin was an 1861 $5 Libbie, probably VF or EF. Bought it at the Houston coin show when I was maybe 12. I had saved up from my paper route, but I only had $15. It was $30. Mom, sweetheart that she was, ponied up the rest.

Thanks again, mom ! Peace and blessings.

Awesome. I know I can always count on my dad for something cool like that for my birthday.

Ha, I guess what I really mean is that they're just too expensive for me period. The occasional $100 - $200 gold coin I can afford...anything above that cuts too deep into what I can spend every few months on coins, which means less $10 - $30 purchases when I go to shows, buy online, etc.

My first gold coin was a 1979 Kruggerand. It was a gift from my grandmother at Christmas in 1979. All 21 grandkids got one. (My father advised her to give all the grandkids a Kruggerand rather the cash equivalent.) I still have that coin. I kept it as gold hit $850 only a few months later and as gold dropped to around $200. Gold was over $1,000 last week and I still plan to keep it. It is a tangible connection to my grandmother (long deceased now).

Well done. I have a 1900 Silver Dollar with the same story behind it as well. :) It was her year of birth and she's long gone too... :( BTW, my first gold coin was a California Fractional 1/2 dollar which was stolen along with my 21 Seated Dollars by an ex GirlFriend in 1982.

    ex girlfriends.....ouch....
I look at it like this "Behind every hot girl is some guy tired of putting up with her edited"

The whole idea of using **** in place of an actual word is to make sure that word is not obvious. The meaning still gets across but the vulgarity does not. When you use letters and then *** - you aren't really changing anything. Personally I always preferred $#%@&@, but hey ****** works too.
