I have seen a few posts here on discoloration on the new release of 2019 reverse proof W cents. But I wonder if anyone else has experienced the severe discoloration that I have received on my example. I have posted some pictures. Thanks for the comments.
Yikes. I thought my first proof was bad. Luckily my reverse proof wasn't bad at all. That is just horrible.
Meow just looked up some graded ones to see how much those are and noticed NGC holders the penny Obverse up; And PCGS holders the penny Reverse up. Wonder why?
Thanks for the sympathy everyone. I also sent a picture to Coin World to see if anyone else has experienced something similar. Isn't this the first time the West Point Mint has struck cents? Seems like they are having problems preparing the proof planchets. My silver proof set is outstanding, and it was struck at the San Francisco mint. Perhaps some people from S.F. can help West Point get up to speed here. The whole thing about sending the entire proof set back to replace the W cent seems like it discourages widespread returns. What happens if the set sells out? Then you just get a refund. Oh well, let's see if any more turns up. Maybe I just won the lottery with this one. My real question is, How come I can't win the real lottery?
I keep trying to tell myself that they were free and we shouldn't complain. But, if it represents the West Point Mint, then will we hesitate to buy future coins from them.
The interesting thing is the West Point Mint American Silver Eagles are outstanding, both uncirculated and proofs. I've never seen any problems with this mint until now, and this is the first time they did cents, so it must have something to do with cents specifically. They are different planchets and composition. Last month, remember the discoloration on the regular proofs? Now my example here, which seems like a problem with washing the planchets. I predict that their uncirculated finish, due next, will not have any problems because it is not a proof. S.F. mint never had any problems with its first-run issues in 2018, like the special finishes and reverse proofs. I hope my coin is simply a very minor aberration, but it should have never been released. Something like this should have been caught, as I do believe that a whole batch had this problem and should have been destroyed as part of quality control.
