I just don't understand how SGS and their cronies are managing to obtain bids over current prices for the 20th anniversary silver eagle set that are currently being sold on e-bay!!! In point is the auction which was a live auction by "universallive" #280205100757 which sold for $440 which is well above prices realized for this same set graded by PCGS or NGC at "69's". I wouldn't give any SGS 20th anniversary silver eagle set a "69" anything as I know their grading and handling of coins to be atrocious! I still cannot understand that buyers are still willing to overpay for SGS items. Most real collectors are knowledgeable regarding SGS and what that pedigree stands for. GO FIGURE!!! Possibly a crony (shill) bidder! To protect the prices they really want! Or an attempt to somewhat manufacture artificially inflated prices for price guides! I still see that the ANA has done nothing regarding the SGS website statement... News: On April 10, 2007, Star Grading Services was requested to submit a proposal for exclusive grading services for the American Numismatic Association. While we do not currently have the resources to do this, we viewed the request as a wonderful recognition of our growing popularity and market acceptance. I have never heard back from the ANA board after I notified them of this and they stated that they would be checking with their legal counsel regarding this statement. Again GO FIGURE!
That's pretty ballsy. I thought NGC had a multi-year agreement with the ANA to be their Official Grading Service.
I have a better question for you. Why was that listing not pulled from eBay? eBay rules state that: That listing both states the grading company and gives a price guide, yet eBay will not pull it Why? Their answer is that these auctions have better feedback and a better return policies. Tell Jack about their return policies and I will not touch a seller with a 98% feedback
Remember, eBay generally does NOT search for violations. They respond to items reported by users. No report, no action.
Absolutely. Ebay is not going to waste it's valueable time looking for ways to lose fees. I have to admit though when they get several complaints suddenly about an auction (usually courtesy of CTers) they have been acting much quicker. Ebay knows that seriious collectors are fed up and will respond - we just have to keep reporting en masse. I send my share of "questions" to sellers as well. The big ones just swat at us like flies but someone with a feedback of a few hundred or less gets jittery I find. Hit em hard and early when possible. clembo
Just thought I'd take another closer look at the seller. Looks like they sell SGS garbage using "LIVE" auctions ONLY! HERE'S THE LINK
Not that those auctions are really any better, but at least they follow the eBay rulles. I cannot report them.
The only time SGS and ABON are any good is when belive it or not you get a good deal. I would not purchase there coins for grading, but recently I purchased a 1973 S proof Ike, 1973 S 40% silver proof Ike and a 1973 S MS 40% silver Ike. They had the grades as PR 70, PF 70 & MS 70 like all their coins. As soon as I received them I cracked them out of there holder and filled a few holes in my Ike Dansco. Like I said a good deal as the 3 coins I got for $21.80 + S/H which I thought was pretty good as the 73 40% silver proof was going for more money than that alone. Please do not get me wrong as I am not sticking up for ABON or SGS but if you are looking for a certain coins to fill some holes in albums and really do not care about the grade and just want a decent coin sometimes it pays to look that way.
