anyone else notice the new interests of the younger collectors? I've noticed the older members talk about morgans and lincolns, but a good majority of the younger ones, myself included, have switched interests into Peace dollars. They are much more affordable in higher grades, yet hold the cherished big silver dollar design. I see a renewed interest in this series starting. Any comments?

I am not that young, but I like the Peace dollars a lot myself. Probably because they are so much more affordable than the Morgans. Don't get me wrong.....I love the Morgans. They are beautiful coins. Just out of reach in price for many of them The Peace dollars are far rarer than the Morgans too.

I absolutely love the Morgans, but I also am showing an interest in the Peace dollars. It nice to only have 28 coins (I hope that's right) for a complete date and mintmark collection. (even though the 1921, 1928, and 1934-s keys are costly). However, it's a heck of alot easier than the 94 coins needed for a date and mint mark set of Morgans. (and ALOT CHEAPER too)!

For the past month, I have been trying to put together a very nice set of Peace dollars in UNC condition. I have most of the set except the 21, 27D, 28 and 34S. Out of the ones that I do have, about 2/3 are in UNC condition. The ones that are not, I am slowly replacing. If you really spend the time on this you can really find some nice Choice BUs for reasonable costs.

The other project that I am working on at the same time is an UNC collection of Franklin Half Dollars. My dad gave me a full set, but they were circulated. Now I am working my way backwards and replacing the Circ ones with Choice BU ones. This is a relatively cheap set to put together and easy to do. Plus, it looks great when put together in a folder.

wow, I am 13 and I was just about to start a thread on peace dollars, but I guess I will ask it here.

Are peace dollars more like commemoratives for the WWl??? I only like to collect proper currency, and the peace dollar is of course a "dollar", but is it more of a commemorative?

I've been considering Peace dollars as the next set I start. Guess I better get going. With all the renewed interest, prices may be going up!

Seriously, this is the next set I will be starting, for all the reasons already listed. It is a smaller set, still a dollar coin, and best of all, very nice examples can be found at reasonable prices.

I've always liked Peace dollars. I carry a 1924 as a pocket piece. I know they aren't as popular with collectors as Morgans, but I believe they are an underappreciated series. I'm of the opinion that since they can be had for a much more reasonable sum than Morgans their potential is great, especially for younger collectors or those with a tighter budget.

Ryan, the minting of the Peace dollar came about at the urging of Ferran Zerbe of San Francisco, a veteran numismatist who I believe was the official historian for the American Numismatic Association. (ANA) he presented a paper in 1920 at the ANA convention entitled, "Commemorate the peace with a coin for circulation". That peace he was refering to being the end of world war I, the "war to end all wars". The ANA recommended that a dollar design be used and that the dollar be a commemorative coin and be issued for general circulation. The big difference here is that commemorative coins as such were never intended for circulation, but ratherto help fund specific projects.

Oh, okay, thank you. BTW, what would you consider it? Proper currency, or a commemorative?

A proper regular issue, not a commemorative. Not currency either, which is paper money.

Great thread. I've always felt the Peace series is under-appreciated. I love 'em.

One great feature of this series is their collectability. It's reasonable for average folks to complete a set in nice grades - unthinkable for Morgans.

Another great feature - there are still plenty of VAMs out there for cherry-picking !

For devotees, be sure to read "Encyclopedia of Morgan and Peace Dollars" by Van Allen / Mallis.

Ditto on the comments. I've collected the Ikes and now am looking at the Peace Dollars. Morgans hold absolutely no interest for me as there are way too many and they're way too expensive. I have the same feelings about the Lincoln set. As everyone is buying up Lincolns, they are essentially guaranteeing that fewer and fewer new collectors will be interested in that series. Too many of them and way too much money.

What's cool about the Peace Dollar is that there still are a couple of "Holy Grail" Peace Dollars to make it a challenge, but it isn't something that will take a lifetime either.

I, unlike many have never cared for the design of the Morgan Dollar. Oh well, to each his own... but I LOVE Peace dollars. It's one of the only sets that I have. Almost everything else is type.

A beautiful series that is under collected IMO with several pieces having less than a million struck. The 1927-P is one for example...

i have always liked peace dollars. im not sure if im considered young or not (depends on your age!) but i like them much more than morgans. morgans are ok but that reverse on the peace dollar i absolutely love. its a clean simple design on both sides and i love that you can get most of them for cheap, even by my meager budget standards!

i plan on getting many more in the future.

I never understood why Peace dollars weren't more popular than the Morgan series, as they are a much more attractive design to me and the series is much easier (and cheaper) to complete. However, I don't expect their relative popularity to change anytime soon...Mike

I have always looked into a morgan collection and when I run my eyes down greysheet BOOM there's the CC's and many other $1000+++ coins that I don't see myself completing. I do love the series but even when I am older I don't see myself completing it. Some of the keys can by bought in very low grades but even though they're keys, they still stay a hole in the set. I attempted it by buy 2 CC's and a few others and quickly bailed as I was over a grand already with just those 2 and many more to go.

The Franklins are always favored as price and supply are with you.

I agree with spider, I like the Morgans but no way can I afford the set. I do own some nice example pieces and plan on picking up a few more. The peace dollar has always been the set that I have wanted to collect. I need the dreaded 24-s, 27-s and 34-s in MS-63 to finish. I passed on three 27S's this week at the coin show because they didn't have eye appeal or weak strike which is common for the series but I love them. I have a lady liberty with a moustash error and would love to get a nice rainbow toned peace dollar but can't afford and find one yet. I think a strong struck 21 peace dollar is the coolest, or da' bomb diggity. I own three but only one with a strong strike.

I have always liked the design of the Peace Dollar. This is one of the many sets that I'm in the process of completing. I bought the more expensive ones first to get them out of the way, it makes completing the set much more realistic, especially if and when the values increase. I've done it that way with most of my sets. I only paid $409 dollars for my 1928 in AU58 and need only a few more to complete the set. Im finding the 1924-S to be the one thats giving me trouble, I cant find one that I really like.
