That's a fantastic James I gold piece, thank you for sharing. He's also the James of the King James Bible and for that reason many people choose to ignore, or seek to outright deny, despite the evidence, some of his lifestyle choices. He remains a fascinating and somewhat neglected monarch, though it sounds like he didn't have the most amiable personality. Being the father of Charles I also carries quite a bit of historical weight.

I did not know that NGC slabbed hammered coins - with so much variety and variability in the minting process, how do they determine anything resembling a consistent grade? Especially with the ubiquitous clipping of coins from that era, which would qualify as damage for any modern coin. Are hammered coins submitted to NGC under "non-US" or "Ancient" coins?

As far as I know, ANACS/ PGGS/ NGC slab hammered coins from 650BC-1600s. TPGs will call out a "clipped" coin as "Details/ Tooling" With the horrible penalties for "clipping", I am surprised that it even took place.....

Thanks John, this is good information about the TPGs grading hammered coins. The "clipping" of so many of these coins will be an issue. How much will they allow, if any, before a details grade is given?

And, wow! That James I gold piece is a real stunner.
