    Hi

Not much to go on I know, but if anyone has any idea what this coin is I’d appreciate it please?

Am trying to research/catalogue some recently inherited coins.

    Thank you in advance.

It is a rather damaged British halfpenny from 1799.

The bad news is that in that condition, it is worth only about $1 USD or less as-is. It is a very common type, and even in Fine (F12) grade, it would be only a $5-6 coin. This particular coin would grade Poor (PO01).

Here is the NGC/Krause catalog entry for the type (KM647).

The good news is that it is a genuine 220-year-old coin with the portrait of King George III on it, so it might have some interest as a curiosity to someone interested in that period of history.

PS- if it is closer in diameter to a US cent than a quarter, then you have a 1799 farthing rather than a halfpenny. Though the date is not fully readable on this one, it's easy to attribute to 1799 because it's a one-year type.

Thank you lordmarcovan for your help.

Yes, I fully appreciate it’s poor quality, bless.

I’ve just measured the diameter which is approx 35mm. Am in the UK, but guessing the US Quarter is larger than the Cent.

    Thanks again!

You have the larger halfpenny, then, which is not surprising since they're a bit more common than the 1799 farthings, I believe.

Since it is already harshly scrubbed, there would be no harm in carrying it as a "lucky pocket piece" or using it in jewelry or a similar craft project.

'Tis common and cheap (<£1), but fun nonetheless.

If you were located in the U S you could sell the sizzle and boost the value
by calling it a War of 1812 battle relic war trophy.

It was one of these once, but it's had a hard life. :sorry:
