I saw something on the news last night about cars getting vandalized.

Turns out people are stealing the catalytic converters - they're under the car and you don't notice until you try to start the car. :)

    WHY are they doing this?

Well, apparently there is approximately 1/10 of an ounce of platinum in each one. The news report I saw reported on one body shop that had 10 or so cars vandalized in such a way.

In these parts, the junk dealers will only give you $25 a pop for a scrap catalytic converter... cheapskates!!

This I disagree, this only applies to old catalytic where manufactures didn't know how to platinum strip. If I am not mistaken, Japanese manufacturers had more platinum in their catalytic than the American counterpart but I can guarantee that there is no way 1/10 oz of platinum is used these days, maybe 20 years ago. Those parts didn't even cost 30 dollars in the past when platinum prices were at a low 100-150usd ish. Chances are now you are buying palladium catalytic which is a lot cheaper and gives similar results unless you run a diesel engine.

IIRC, if you have the right ammount of Cat-Scrap, a 55 gal drum worth can be worth nearly $50K. I gotta find that article....

Yup! This is quite common.. I went the otherday to get a new muffler... and a woman walks in complaining about a loud scratchy sound coming from her Ford... guy looks under and sure enough, the ENTIRE engine to muffler system was missing!
mechanic said it was the 8th case he had seen in the week! Most common in trucks coz they are easier to get under - this has apparently become common in the area in the last 2 months - I wonder why :)

Scrappers around here are giving $45.00 for junk cats. But, If you have a cat off a lexus or BMW, they can fetch around $500.00 from the right scrapper...

And it is happening in the big cities quite a bit... The perp just slides under your jeep or urban cowboy truck with a battery operated sawzall and snags himself a quick $45.00...
