So far only 2 are known. Both are certified. This article states that 8 were made and that this collector has 7 of them So much misinformation! https://fox8.com/2019/04/26/oklahoma-coin-collector-offering-10000-for-rare-penny/ @furryfrog02 enjoy
It's fascinating to look at the erosion of the story. The original story in an Oklahoma paper, mostly correct. A TV station in Alabama picks up the story but doesn't get it quite right. Another TV station in Ohio picks it up and gets it even more wrong.
They don't. The reporter paraphrasing the original story doesn't understand what she's writing. There were 7 varieties of 1982 cents. The 1982-D small date copper in question (officially called an error, not a variety) is the eighth. The guy in Oklahoma has the 7 normal coins and wants the elusive eighth, of which there are only 2 known as of today.
That's odd because I have 12 of them, but I haven't told anyone yet. oops This one statement is also incorrect you actually have it hit it with a very heavy hammer to test it. on both sides, and around the edges. .. so we should expect an influx of "is this it, the 1982 D?" postings ? and subsequent dismissal of responses?
As stated.. They don't. And the guy does not have 7 of them. That's why it's important to know the real story about the extremely rare 1982 Small Date D Mint Copper Cent!
When you consider the rarity (2 known out of approx. 1 billion small date Denvers) $10,000 seems under priced.
Like the article says, just find the 8th one and have it certified. The article even gives his phone number to contact him.
I've got a 1982 D small date in better shape than the one in pictures I've seen online. I just need to know where and how to sell it
eBay, or you may use the For Sale forum here, after you pass the probationary period. The rules for that are here. No wantlist solicitations or selling are allowed in the discussion boards on these forums- all that has to take place in the Advertising forums, by qualified users. Welcome to CoinTalk. Edited to add: you might want to confirm that you actually have what you think you have first, by posting good pictures of both sides of the coin in the discussion forums. But remember- no selling in the discussion forums- just discussion! After ten posts, you're past the probationary period.
Looks like you have a Copper Plated zinc cent. Only worth 1 Cent. The Copper version of which only 2 have ever been found is worth thousands.
