JeffC Go explore something and think a happy thought!

I wonder if NGC and PCGS themselves have some custom special device to crack their slabs.

I heard a story once about a guy who accidentally cut a gold coin almost in half cutting a slab open. He was using some wire cutters or something. I can’t remember if that was here or from a coin dealer...

I saw a guy on Facebook who took a knife and cut out a $500 coin by cutting around the coin in the slab. I told him that it was extremely dangerous and risky, but he was utterly conviced that he knew what he was doing and that nothing bad would ever happen.

But I’ve never damaged a coin by cracking it out

There are special plastic cutters used in parts manufacturing. The heavy duty scissors will allow a clean cut around the out shell with little effort or cracking. It has been a long time since I purchased mine but an industrial tool company might have one.
