Okay, I'll admit it... I signed up for the PCGS collector club awhile back, as evil as it is. Anyway as some of you may already know, PCGS offers quarterly deals to members and this quarter it's a free gold coin submission (plus shipping fees). While I have a few smaller denomination AGEs, I only have two gold coins in my possession that are not bullion, a 1776 Guinea and an 1853-O Coronet Dollar. I've read that it's quite common for gold guineas from this time period to be harshly cleaned, and I don't have the expertise to tell if mine has or not. Do you think PCGS would be sent back ungraded? I originally thought it was a gouge but it's clearly an addition. A loop for a chain possibly? Does this ruin the coin and would PCGS send it back ungraded? Any and all comments appreciated. Thanks!
gold guinea looks like it has been cleaned but has the best chance of grading. I think they will Body Bag the $1 gold for sure as damaged. Freddypm
Yeah, the gold dollar will likely be bodybagged because it is a former jewelry piece (which is where the solder is from).
Fudge. I really don't want to send in one of my AGEs... getting bullion graded is just silly. Maybe I'll send in the guinea and see what happens. It'll be only what, 15 or 20 bucks for shipping and insurance? Thanks for the opinions guys!
Depends on the value of the coin. Might be less (on your end). I'm not sure what PCGS will charge for return shipping. There is no chance the gold $1 will slab - body bag for sure.
