Hi Joseph, welcome to CT. The rim of your SBA looks normal. You can compare yours with the regular 1999-P SBA in the NGC website, at: https://www.ngccoin.com/coin-explorer/anthony-dollars-1979-1999-pscid-52/1999-p-1-ms-coinid-19581 Hope this helps.
The 1979-P was issued with two designs...a "Near Date" with a wide rim and a "Far Date" with a narrow rim. According to the Red Book, late issues of the 1979-P and subsequent issues have the wide rim with the Near Date. It would seem to me that this should include the 1999 coins, but the OP's photo clearly shows a "Far Date". This has me a bit confused. My copy of the Red Book is from 2013. Does anyone have another issue that contradicts or corrects this information? Chris
I know! I never paid any attention to the Red Book description before this thread came up, and it has me a bit confused. Chris
You need to compare it to some other 1999 coins to see if it is normal for the date. The 1999's came almost 20 years after the previous coins so it is possible that the rims were deliberately different
The Susan B Anthony Dollar was supposed to be a turning point in US coinage. A 1976 study recommended the US Cent to be halted by 1980, the half dollar eliminated too, and the Dollar shrunk to a more usable size. The Susan B. Anthony Dollar was part of the outcome ... but I guess they still made the Cent though ... Even though I have a bunch of 1979, 1980 SBAs the thin/thick rim still drives me nuts. I guess I have all of one of them, and none of the other.
Notice on Michael K's coin the obv die is is misaligned. The rim at the lower left is noticeable thinner than on the upper right.
Now I have to look at the reverse. Hold on. (thanks) Since it is MAD on both sides, is it off center? Since this is a special case with the 11 sided rim. The thin parts are on the bottom on both sides.
I have a 2017 Red Book. Reading the notes in Red Book I get the impression the dies for the 1999 was only modified to strengthen details on the reverse. Early on the dies for the 1979 was modified to widen the border rim. Am i wrong assuming the dies used for the 1999 are the 1979 dies with the modified reverse?
NGC and PCGS CoinFacts webpages (weblinks below) said only 1979 SBA has wide rim. 1999 SBA has no wide rim. That may explain why you see 1999 rim is not as wide as 1979. https://www.ngccoin.com/coin-explorer/anthony-dollars-1979-1999-pscid-52-desig-ms https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/category/susan-b-anthony-dollar-1979-1999/747
"The obverse design was modified in 1979 to widen the border rim." Wide rim = Near date "Late issues of 1979-P and subsequent issues have the wide rim." Subsequent issues = meaning later years "Dies for the 1999 coins were further modified to strengthen details on the reverse." Ergo: 1999 should have continued with the Wide rim/Near date Chris
Yes, that is my thought based on the description in the Red Book, but it doesn't make sense. I'm thinking that it was just a misprint in the book. Chris
I have a complete set of SBA's and the 1980, 81, 99 dollars all have a sorta widish rim. Not as wide as the 1979P wide rim (near date) but not as narrow as the '79PDS narrow rim. My '99P is definitely wide, but my '99D is sort of on the narrowish side of not-so-wide. I think they all fall within a normal variation of wide though. Is that as clear as mud?
Since it is thin at the bottm on both sides that would mean the dies were both misaligned, but is DIFFERENT directions. And none of the design is missing so it is NOT and off-center.
Yes I thought it was odd that they were on opposite sites when I turned the coin over and expected it to be either centered on the reverse, or thin at the top and it wasn't. Both sides thin on the bottom.
I know this is an older thread but for clarity - Wide rim (near date) is the norm - the Narrow rim (far date) is the variety and that is only in the 1979 p mint? Yes/no?
