Have you ever, or have you heard of, a coin being damaged while removing it from a TPG slab?
    Comments welcome.
I've always just used a hammer and a hard surface, never had a problem.
I'd probably use a band saw if I had easy access to one.
Edit: As Clawcoins suggested, I'm thinking of using "common sense and reasonable care"!

I saw on YouTube someone hammering a slab open.
Of course, the slab was flat and they hammered right where the coin was ...

I think a more appropriate question would be .. when using common sense, has anyone ever damaged a coin while taking it out of a slab. lol

I voted "No" on your poll, but, then again, I've never broken a coin out of a slab.

I voted No on your poll and I have broken out between 2 and 300 hundred coins from slabs.

Ooop's not a TPG slab but a Mint 5 coin plastic holder.

Never have. Ive broken almost every major slab and never have damaged a coin. Using a vice to break the seam and a rag draped over, I've had NGC slabs blow apart before and the rag helps contain things lol.

That’s a range of 299. Can you narrow that down? You sound like the cable company quoting install hours. :troll:

Well, it's actually a range of 298 if you look at it that way, but I meant a range of between 200 and 300

I've probably cracked out close to 100 between NGC, PCGS, ANACS, ICG, and a couple basement graders. Never had a problem. You just have to keep the area with the coin protected and only work the edges. You're not trying to obliterate the slab; just breaking the seal is sufficient.

No I haven’t damaged a coin while cracking it out. But I dropped a raw Doppeltaler today on my way back home from the bank :p

No, but I damaged a 1892 TDR Barber half taking it out of a 2x2:banghead:

I would bet more coins have been damaged being removed from a stapled 2X2 than have been damaged being cracked out of a slab..... Though I doubt anyone has the time on their hands to do that kind of a study....

I voted yes because I know people that have damaged coins, removing them from slabs. That's part of what the poll ask.

    2 hundred = 200
