Hi Guys, 1921 Wheat Penny(steel,or silver) I need some help in identifying this penny that i happened upon this week.. It looks like a steel penny or maybe a silver one.. Does anyone have any information on this coin? It weighs 3.0grams... thanks,,,
a regular wheat penny weighs 3.11 grams the silver dime weighs is 2.50 grams and the 1943 steel penny weighs 2.70 grams I hope this helps...
Well, it's not steel (check it with a magnet if you don't believe me). Weight is good for a "holed" wheatie that's been plated. I believe that is what you have.
I agree. Lincolns have been the subject of chemistry experiments, "proofing" of industrial plating equipment, and the like for decades. This coin could have gotten coated back when it was fresh from the mint, or 50 years later.
Yup, looks like someone punched a hole in this penny and plated it to make it "prettier" to wear as jewelry or perhaps it was a lucky penny. Who knows, it's old, it likely has stories to tell if it could talk. But to a collector, it's a damaged penny when it comes down to business.
Hi, If it was platted wouldnt the copper be visible beneath the scratches of the platting? I dont see anything but the steel under the scratches and the punched hole edges are solid steel as well.. Any thoughts?
well if it was punched then plated then that would explain why it looks like that around the edge of the hole... or after it was plated and punched they noticed that and went back and touched it up. but im pretty sure they never made a steel penny for that year. hope this helps some. :welcome: to cointalk!!!
My son gave me a plated cent bacK years ago. It was a middle school science project. I have also found others over the years searching rolls back in the day. Reed
"Silver" pennies are a meme here. If you only knew how many have been posted you would immediately delete your post.
