Early Stage Capped Die. A Late Stage will show more of the design as the metal stuck to the die gets thinner and thinner. An attentive press operator would stop the press as soon as they noticed the damaged coins coming out.
What "metal" is stuck to the die? The cap? The die cap is the "metal" stuck to the die. It gets stuck and strikes other coins, eventually it will look like a bottle cap. It falls off, presumably.
