It's a 2.1. Yes it was discovered after the 2.0 was listed, but it did come first. The NGC Black with silver logo is known as the 1.0. The white insert was then used with the white label and the color of the foil stamp was then changed to gold for the 2.0 and 2.1 holders. The 2.0 then transitioned to the 3.0 with a label change to add the border around the edge of the label.

I have a 2.0 in my collection and I am always on the hunt for a 2.1. Hopefully I will find one sooner rather than later. I don't think I will ever get a 1.0 NGC Black unless I get extremely lucky and cherrypick one. They tend to sell in the $1,000.00 plus range, regardless of the coin.

Yeah. I don’t collect holders. When it all comes down to the basics, it’s really about the coin. That’s not to say a coin that’s original, and “all there”, and still in an older holder doesn’t possess some additional allure, but when the dust settles, it’s still really all about the coin. I’ve seen too many over the past several years, in old holders, because quite frankly, they wouldn’t straight grade today. There are reasons why some coins haven’t been cracked out and resubmitted to a TPG in pursuit of a higher grade. Even back in the day, the TPGs made mistakes, or “net graded” coins.

And then again... there are still some “gems for the grade”out there, hanging out in old holders. 69F3C961-CBDE-4BE2-BF2B-64AC0B964267.jpeg 625F42AC-4EA1-4BC5-8F23-272810FC7037.jpeg

Make that $4,000. The census of known examples has stood at 30 for at least about 6 years now. And ten of them are in one collectors hands.

Not the best image, but this is the one from my collection.

Great Scott that's a nice holder. I'd like to see one in hand one day.

What's your estimate on the census numbers on the 2.0 and 2.1 slabs?

You are mentioned in the CoinWorld article. Like coins, holders are part of the hobby too. Maybe at some point holders with special labels will also be collectible.

Do you have a like to the article? I don't get Coin World.

Unfortunately, that article appeared in the April 2019 issue. I don't think CoinWorld archives articles for at least 2 years. That makes it only available right now in the digital subscription area or hard print. I have a subscription, but, I can't link you to the digital magazine area. I have two copies of hard print. You are more than welcome to one if you want.
