Impossible penny?!

    I have not found anything on this and as far as I know it does not exist. Steel penny 1982. Weighs right amount. Who has any idea or info. It would be appreciated.

    Most likely science class experiment - plated cent.

    Either plated or stripped of it's copper plating. I vote plated. Either way, not an error.

    We did this when I was in fourth grade, haha. Use vinegar, some copper ions suspended in a fluid, throw in a catalyst, and it separated the zinc from the steel. Very fun experiment. Now you know the basics of how it was done :)

    82 was a transition year. It looks as if the plating was removed.
    And what you have is the zinc.
