After I finish the walking liberty set, I am probably going to go for the peace dollars. They contain a lot more silver, just image the look and the price of the whole set!

You should definitely continue! Guess I've been collecting since the day I was born (given an Ike dollar from grand dad, still have it), and just this year finally completed my Lincoln pennies set, 30 years to do it, and have collected lots of other random stuff along the way. Even if you take a break for a few years here & there, hang on to the coins you've already collected. They are an investment & one day you might have some kids or grandkids to pass them on to. Don't sweat the haters at school. There's nothing wrong with video games, electronics, etc. either... except that they are kinda expensive these days... I'm biased though, I'm a bit of a gaming nut (so much so that now I make them for a living :goof:)

A senator got in soooo much trouble for using that word in a press conference... People can be so dumb...

Don't let anyone dictate to you what you should do for a hobby. If you enjoy it then it's for you...

I glad to hear that you plan to continue. I think in the long run you will find that you made the right decision.

I'd like to comment on one thing you said
At this stage of your life one thing you must do is learn to stand up and make your own decisions and not let others exert undue influence over you. Today they make fun of you because they collect coins, in the future you wil almost certainly have some who will do so to get you to smoke, or do drugs, or go out and get drunk every weekend. If you haven't learned to resist these people you will eventually wind up doing something you will regret for a long time. Understand that many people are on a deadend trail in life will often try a drag down those who have things or are getting ahead. (At the risk of sounding racist, this is the problem with a lot of the black youth in this country. They fall to peer pressure not to succeed because if they start to do well in school they get ridiculed by the underachievers as "acting too white". So they stop studying and the result? Low test scores , a high drop out rate, dead end jobs, lack of representation in better jobs, and a high representation in the prison population. And it's not because they CAN'T, it's because they allow others to infulence them and they DON'T.) So make sure that what ever decisions you make, for good or for bad are YOUR decisions and not just those of your peers.

I'm glad you decided to stick with coins as it is YOUR decision not your friends'.

    Coins are timeless.

My family still doesn't get that and I'm 45. Luckily my wife does.

Yep, keep it up! You won't regret it at all. One tip that I wish someone would have mentioned to me when I was your age, is every now and then save up and buy a nice key date coin. When I was young my local coin dealer sold me a bunch of extremely common coins. They were common (and cheap) then...and they still are today. The set of Walking Liberty Halves that you are working on is great.

One thing about silver coins, they all have value!

Tuff decision at your age since so many other kids are doing other things than collecting and looking at silly coins all the time. It may sound like a millions years away but someday you will be old and constantly saying or thinking "Why didn't I do this or that?" "Why didn't I save more money?" Really a strange thought at a young age to even consider EVER being old. I spend way to many hours thinking of what I could have done if not so influenced by a bunch of idiot friends back in the good old days. If only I would have saved just a few more coins. I was collecting coins as far back as the early 40's and sure wish today I had collected more. Don't even listen to those other kids when it comes to YOUR future. Beleive me there is about a 99.9999% chance you'll never see any of them again in about 20 or 30 years so who really cares what they say or think. AND if you get as old as me, and I hope you do, most of those kids you play with today will be really long gone.

Here's what I think you should do. Is you say enoughs enough and want to stop. SAVE as much money as you can for one year with out spending it on anything you dont NEED. Buy a nice sized gold coin in a au or higher grade. Put it away with your other coins, and if you want to stop collecting after that. Go ahead. Your gonna be 14 by the time you buy that coin. Your then have 4 year until your 18 and life takes on some great changes. Im not saying stop collecting all together but if your thinking about stopping, go out with bang! After all Im almost sure you'll be back into coin collecting when your older as MANY people stop collecting in there teens and end up coming back into it when they are in there mid to late 20s. At least YOU will have a goldie that by the time you start collecting again will more then likly be worth more if not MUCH more then when you bought it, and at least you didnt blow your money on stuff that will have no impact on your life when your older. Take it from a lot of us. We all wished we bought gold when we where 14. All you need to do Is pick a gold coin out as a TARGET. save all the money you can and get it. Beleive it or not, At 13 you can find alot of ways to make some good money for you age. I used to dig out drive ways in the winter and collect cans and bottles in the spring and summer and do ANY OD JOB I COULD FIND to make money. I worked a summer job at 14 as well. I made $3,000.00 dollars at 14 between everything I could do and buying NOTHING I DIDNT NEED. I spent half of that on clouths for the next school year and the other half on coins. Granted i was affraid to buy gold at the time becuase i wanted more coins the just one. But if I the one gold coin i should have it would be worth 4 times what I spent for it then. Im sorta kicking my self for not thinking about it then. but I was 14 and no one told me like im telling you. Good luck and remember your 13 by 14 you could have yourslef a very nice 1 oz gold coin. not just a bunch of common old pocket change or prrof sets. Then take a break from the hobby. Go fishing hang out with friends get a girl and grow older until the day you return to coin collecting. Becuase I bet a 1908 $20 dollar Saint Gordain you will be back. :)

I'm 23 now, and I wish that I hadn't stopped collecting (or being interested in coins) when I hit middle-school and high-school, 'cause my collection now would be huge!

The sad truth is that "normal" people will probably poke fun at you until you're 50 for collecting coins, so you might as well keep on collecting and do what you like. In the end, you can always just play games at your friends houses, ha.

One of my friends has collected coins since he was 12. He never sold any of them, but always picked up a new one he needed or if he saw a semi-key date for a good deal, he might get that, too. As the years went by, he became more successful, his coins nicer (Starred Reverse anyone?) and now his collection is worth over $500,000. He is only 47 years old, too. He has rolls of 1921-D merury dimes, 6 1909-S VDB, etc.
Stick with it! As you get older and more sophisticated, so will your collection. Someday, you may have that MS Chain Cent! Good luck, Mike

    Thank you everyone.

Oldman: You are right. I have spent so much money on silver coins, and if you put all that together, I could of probably bought 2 ounces of the $50.00 gold coins. Too late now, I barely have enough to buy a 1/10 ounce one. But...... I listed all of the pokemon cards that I collected when I was about 10 years old (now they are just pieces of cardboard to me), and do you think it would be good to start off with a 1/10 ounce coin, or go even higher?

I remember being thirteen and what I wanted to collect. I read a book, The history of U.S. coins and I saw pictures of Morgan dollars and I said to myself, I will own some of them someday. I used to mow grass during the summers and weekends to make money. I used that money to buy uncirculated Morgans. My best friends mom would travel and hour and a half away every six weeks to visit family and I would go with her. On the way home we would stop at a small coin dealers shop and I couldn't wait to see what Morgan dollars were available for sale. My first purchase was a 1878-CC Morgan dollar choice uncirculated. I paid the handsome sum of fifteen dollars for this coin. I was thirteen at that time.
I kept notes on my coin purchases and I had the good sense to store them properly.
    Fast forward forty years later.
I started sending these Mordan dollars off to NGC and PCGS for Grade and VAM attribution. The 1878-CC now resides in a NGC holder, graded MS 64.
I started reading my old notes...Wow! In most cases I remember buying the coins and why. What a wonderful treat to see myself at that age (in a detached way) and see what attracted me to buy these coins.
Coin collecting is a wonderful and satisfying hobby. It also tells us a little about ourselves in that we can take the time to appreciate the beauty, artistry and historical significance of these coins.
Also, it shows a little of the tresure hunter in all of us.
In the final analysis, we are but brief caretakers of these wonderful historical artifacts and you (we) should enjoy them while we can. If it makes you happy, go for it.

I finally have $115 dollars spare for me to spend on coins. I was heading for the 1/10 ounce gold coin, ( as some of you indented I do) until I just got note that the 1/10 ounce gold coin was the size of a dime (not what I expected). I have a few options here, unless some of you strongly advise I get the gold.

    1. Save up a lot more to get the 1/4 ounce gold coin
    2. Save up even more to get the 1/2 gold coin
    3. Complete silver coin sets that I already have
    4. Save up and work on getting every standard silver coin ever minted by U.S

You help me decide the best choice, after all, silver is taking it step by step and is very cheap. If I spend a lot of money on gold, what if it drops... it is worth a lot more. But if silver drops, I have not lost much. That is what keeps telling my mind not to buy gold. Please help me decide.
    Thanks
(of course I will get more money on the way to try and achieve one of the goals I listed)

Gold is a good buy " When its at the right price" But as for me, I like silver. I dont have a gold coin yet, but I am bidding on one right now. I like silver cause its " poor mans GOLD..." lol. I would much rather have a lot of silver than just a little gold. BUt then again this is just my opinion. I would rather buy 1000 oz of silver than only be able to buy 19oz of gold. There price is right around the same give or take a few dollars. The choice is yours....:hail:
