Hi everyone. I am new to this site and live in Britain, and I hope I can have some help in identifying a coin I have that have that I can find no trace of. Its a George V 1d, dated 1921, and looks to be made of silver. It is minted as a normal 1d coin with Britannia on the reverse. I can 100% say its not Maundy money (GV didnt give this out till 1932) , has not been silver or chromium plated, and shows no sign of this anyway as any wear would have revealed the copper metal beneath. I have attached a scan of the front of the coin
It might be a reproduction made out of something other than silver, have you tried a magnet on it? Clive.
i don't see any listings showing this coin being struck in multiple metals. also, i dug through my world coins collection and found two examples of this penny -- one a pleasant copper, and the other clearly gilded or somehow colored gold. i wonder if it wasn't a common practice to alter these coins at the time? at any rate, *bump* any british coin folks in the house? v.
You wouldn't find any listings of it because it might be a repro... I have two twopence pieces, one's silver and the other's gold. This is because of a chemical reaction with the metal content, perhaps the same with yours?
