Just purchased this coin and need help in grading this 1889-S: http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb185/hgraves_2007/1889S-Reverse.jpg http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb185/hgraves_2007/1889S-Obverse.jpg
I agree with the 63-64 grades. I also see a couple of other things about your coin. The mint mark appears to be a VAM 2-R ( S tilted left ) and the date appears to be a VAM 9-O ( High 9 ) The tilted S has a rarity of R-3 ( scarce-hundreds of thousands ) and the date has a rarity of R-4 ( very scarce-Tens of thousands). Just a couple of things to consider as there are a lot of Variety collectors out there. John
Not that we don't enjoy helping you, but you really should learn how to grade, or ask before you buy the coin. There are some good books out there that aren't $$, and will help you grade. The ANA Grading Guide, and Photograde. The old saying goes: Buy the Book BEFORE you buy the coin... Speedy
I see it maxing out at MS-63 (possibly only MS-62.) Reverse is very nice, but too baggie on the obverse in the prime fields. Looks like it could have been a GSA Morgan.
I'd say a MS-63, might have a slim chance at a 64, but I'd say a safe MS-63. That's a pretty nice strike on her, nice coin! :thumb: Phoenix
By that account; any information here can be gotten somewhere else. A teacher once said the same thing to me once. ''Not that I mind teaching you, but you really should learn on your own.''. Then what did I need her for?
i would probably go to 62 based upon the pic. the reasoning would be the location and the hits on cheek, lower neck, and field marks. it has a nice strike but i cannot tell the quality of the luster. if , in hand, i liked the luster then i would give it the bump up to 63. nice morgan as such and thank you for sharing the pic...steve
