Hi everyone. Ive had this coin for a while now. I think I might be ready to give it a whirl on Ebay. What grade should I put on this 1885 CC Morgan Dollar? What is the true value, Grey Sheet or whatever? What could I expect from Ebay? Thanks for taking your time to read this and give me your opinions.
That's an attractive coin. VERY good strike! And very nice luster. It looks to be PL on the reverse. But it has quite a few bag marks. Liberty took a few hits with reed marks on her cheek and neck. Those reed marks in the field in front of Liberty's nose are very distracting. And there are several chatter marks along the rims. I will venture an estimate of MS-62, 63 without the reed marks in the prime focal areas and rim nicks. With market grading (factoring in the strong strike and PL reverse) it might grade MS-63 or higher. 1885-CC Morgan Grey Sheets at $555/$605 in MS-63. On eBay this coin could go much higher due to the strike and eye appeal. Others will correct me if I am wrong but my understanding is that you are not allowed to use a numerical grade for a coin when selling on eBay unless it has been slabbed by one of the "Top 4" TPGs. You can call it Uncirculated, Brilliant Uncirculated, etc. but you cannot call it MS-63.
Oh yeah, I will definately hold off for a few days. But even if I wanted to send it in, how do I do that? I am not a member or whatever nor am I a dealer. Can anyone just send a coin in to be graded?
I agree, it's a nice strike. And, if you absolutely insist it be sold on Ebay, I'd seriously consider getting it graded somewhere. Nice coin! Guy~
If you are looking to maximize your return with your coin, then PCGS is where to send it. For good or ill, the market has decided PCGS holds their price better than anyone. NGC would be a good choice too. These two are considered the top two third party graders. As for grade, I would grade your coin MS 63. The rim marks in the prime focal area and rim nicks are what keeps this coin from grading MS 64. Please note: I am a conservative grader.
This coin has a lot of positives. Morgans are always popular, and this coin shows why. Check out the hair detail above Liberty's ear ! Look at the eagle's breast feathers - very nice. All indicative of a strong strike. Tons of luster - loaded with cartwheel. Yes, the photo suggests some bagginess. The hits are in all the worst places - Libbie's cheeks, neck, and in front of her face. However, my Morgan photos always show more bagginess than the coin in hand. Giving allowance for that, I'll say this one has a great shot at MS-63. NGC is less expensive than PCGS; "economy" class grading is $16 / coin, but requires 5 coin minimum. Take a look at auction results to determine the difference 'twixt market price for NGC vs. PCGS. They seem very comparable to me; MS63 runs $475 - $500 on teletrade for both NGC and PCGS. Proof Like commands significant premium - closer to $800. IMO, it's well worth submitting to top TPG. Nice coin ! Good luck.
Very nice Morgan!! It looks MS-64 to me. It also looks like a VAM 3 (CC tilted left) -R-4. In my opinion, if you had pictures as nice a these posted on ebay you could save yourself the grading fee. From my experience, most auctions with exceptional photos sell a FMV and often higher.
I have the exact same coin...except it's 1889 I came about it yesterday in a parking lot. It doesn't look marled or anything like that it just has some grime on it and really needs to be cleaned. My camera isn't working right now but as soon as it does I will post some pictures of it...it has officially become my lucky coin:thumb:. Can anyone tell me what the cheapest these things go for and what would be a good and cheap method of cleaning it? I've heard to use baking soda and vinegar. I'm not going to sell it but I'm curious about these details. Thanks in advance for any help and/or advice you could give me. ~Beau
and. If your interestesd in becoming a coin collector, and you become a member of PCGS you get 8 coins graded for free
Well Beau, I hope that you are just pulling our leg per say! An 1889-CC Morgan is very rare and it is even rarer to find one in a Parking Lot! In case you are not pulling out leg, then I will shout to the top of my lungs "DO NOT CLEAN THE COIN". If you clean it, then you could reduce it's value by 25% to 50%. Send the coin to NCS for conservation and grading. Frank
