WOW!! A Dealer friend just called/emailed me and said he wanted me to get 1st shot at this note! Well, guess what??
It's in the New York Collection as of Now! Take a look at this classic. It is not a high graded note, but it is scarce, scarce, and more scarce!!
    First Charter Period Original Issue.

I will post better pics when it comes in to me.

I am one excited puppy!! Can't ya tell??

No problem...It was just 2K and change

Going to have to not bid on a lot I was looking at in the Rosemont Auction...
He told me it is the highest graded note that PCGS has graded...

I just noticed in the pic - is that note clipped or printed off-center? part of the top design looks to be missing. If it is printed off-center, its not noted on the holder, and you might have gotten a nice deal on the note becasue of it.

    Daggerjohn....
You have a point there. I noticed it as well and with the few of these that ever come available, I did not hesitate to buy it. I am not sure what that does to the note and would like to get some opinions as well.

Thanks for the heads up. I went a little overboard here on this but, what the heck, simply could not let that get away!

i would think that with the note being in as good a shape as it is, that the note is a bit off-center. I bought a note that was clipped a couple years ago. But the note i bought, was closer to the other end of the grading scale :) with the circulation, comes edge tears and such. with the note i bought, it was clipped to hide the tiny tears or stains that must have been there. With this note, its tought to think it would have had any rips, stains or other imperfection that would lead someone to clip it.

So without a measurement to be sure, i would have to stage a guess it is off-center ... would that not raise the value over what you paid?

I could be way off on this, but my understanding is that it was actually common for these older notes to be off-center due to the cutting operations being so manual.

As for the note itself, I'm speechless. Another fine purchase. Congrats.

Right. And besides, this is a National. They were actually issued to the banks in sheet form, and the bank was responsible for the signing and cutting. The quality of the cutting varies tremendously; sometimes the notes were even separated by tearing rather than cutting.... I once saw one of these with nearly a half-inch strip of the next note up showing--the dealer selling it said it was "almost enough to call it an error"!

There are 11 $1 to the original charter for #1393. Your note is new to the census.

Serial #41991 was graded AU and #42000 is the only one with a better grade of CU.

You got a good note and I would be happy too.

Kelly 5th edition National Bank note census V3.0 software.

You can also use the Gengerke Large Type or Nationals Census...use this link.. http://thenotedcollector.com/Census.aspx You need to talk with Greg Davis about this. Its good stuff. If your spending thousands of dollars, for large notes or nationals, it would be foolish not to invest in these. They will tell you what your note was graded each time it has shown up on the market, where and what it sold for or didnt. And of course the known populations. Tell Greg I sent you. He deserves alot of credit for the hard efforts he puts into to it.

I understand an appreciate your comments on cost of software or of publications. I had the same feelings.

But, one thing I profess to my customers or my audences in lectures. When it comes to any collecting, not just numismatics....apply the 3 R's
    1. Read - you cant do enough. I say the more I know, the more I dont know. Even after 35 plus years of playing wth currency, I am sill learning.
    2. Research - find out who, where, when and why. Every tidbit of information on an issue or note tells me if its a deal or not.
    3. Resources - find out where to source things out, who is good and who isnt. If you think you found them all, wrong there is another one with the right note for you. When you pass on a note you know in your heart wasnt right, another one will come around. t might not be tomrrow or next year. But you will find it.
And the final suggestion I personnly use. Always walk away from an impulse purchase. If you dont know exactly if its a good deal based on your research and just feel that exciting surge of adrenlin for picking up something. Its time to "about face" and walk away. I would say 80% of the time when I have made an impulse purchase, I was wrong.

This stuff can add up to big money with hard earned efforts off your part. Make each and every one of them count. Collecting is a disciplined endeavor, otherwise your accumulating or hoarding.

I buy books, have a shelf full of them. If I buy a book for currency and it cost me $39.95. I will get my value on that with one or 10 notes I purchase. Just from the informtion I read and saving when I make an educated purchase as a collector.

I am sorry and didnt mean to pontificate this issue. I jabber enough during my lectures. I am just spouting off my stategies for collecting that I value and have worked for me. yours may be different.

My point is, if spending $6.95 is what you can afford thats great. But if your spending hundreds or thousands.....ask yourself this...what is it worth for me to save 10-25% per year on what I spend for currency?

I can guarentee you there are alot of auctions, dealers and sites that will bank on you not knowing

PS I dont sell any of the census stuff, i just use it, because I have overpaid too many times.

I agree 100% :thumb: with your above post.

Since my collecting budget is very small, i try to balance what i spend on books and other informational items with what i spend on numismatic items. This year and the end of last year, 80% of what i spent has been on books and maintenance items (holders etc...) I was in dire need to update old sources, and grab new sources, so put off alot of items i routinely buy each year to grab the books.

The software you showed does look very cool! and will certainly take a look at it further!
