They were pieces of slender silver wire which are cut into the appropriate length/weight and then they are stamped. Thus the oblong shape. Take Care Ben
The wire I put up are some of the last ones made from the time of Peter the Great. Here's another tiny coin at 10mm: a 4 Reales from Guatamala I've got some REALLY tiny coins around here somewhere. Now, If I can only find them.
Here are some of my itty-bitty coins. From Southern part of India, a series known as "Gajapati coins". On obverse, there is an image of decorated elephant and on reverse their is a floral scroll. From right to left the denominations are, quarter fanam, half fanam, one fanam and one pagoda coins. The pagoda coin is slightly smaller then a dime. Regards, Ballabh Garg
And here are some of my favorite early Indian coins. Indo-Greek obol of last greek ruler Eucratides I. His portrait with helmet. (0.52grams) Eucratides I obol and portrait without helmet. (0.48 grams) An obol of a Kushan emperor Kujuka Kadphises with his diademed bust right. He was the founder of Kushan dynasty and his coins shows similarity with earlier Indo-Greek period coins. (0.63 grams) Regards, Ballabh Garg
Fanams Here are few uncommon silver fanams. (0.5 grams) Fanams issued by Marathas under East India Company The fanams issued under Indo-Ducth authorities Fanams nicknamed as 'Kali fanams' issued by rulers of Mysore. Regards, Ballabh Garg
Fanams issued by Tipu Sultan The avarage weight of these fanams are rougly 0.35 grams. Fanams from Pattan mint: Fanams from Nagar mint: Fanams from Kalikut mint: Fanams from Farukhi mint: Regards, Ballabh Garg
I don't know much about Fanums but I just had to have a couple when I saw them. The gold about 7.75mm x 1.20mm and weighs 0.36gm. The silver are about 6.25mm x 1.9mm weighing 0.38gm The 4 tiny ones (DON'T SNEEZE!!) are about 0.2mm x 0.75mm at 0.015gm each. I don't take them out to play very often - especially since the kittens arrived. at 7 months they're racing and learning how to fly.
Here are the smallest coins I have: 1904 Panama 2.5 centisimos 1852 ??? from Potosy (which I guess is Bolivian) 1896 1/4 Real from an unknown place (anyone know?)
LOL The smallest ones I have.I don't have to tell anyone they're mini copies but the detail is amazing and the half is even started to tone. . U.S. half dime is the smallest real coin I have. John
I have one of these: This coin is smaller than 3/8 in across and thick. I bought it as a pagoda from Mysore between 1799 and about 1867. To me it looks like a half pagoda and older???
