A Little birdie told me that there will be two of them in the Heritage Auction in Chicago. I don't know how reliable this person is, but claims they have 13 of them total and have had them for many many years. Also has a MS 69-S DDO, and a few other high end errors. Funny the people you meet at a coinshow. : )
I would like to see these come up for auction, just to see what they would bring! I wonder what the grades are on the Steelies and the 1969-S DDO?! It would be unwise however, to advertise that you have a total of 13 Steelies Dated 1944 when you have two of them going up for auction, as it could severely effect the price that they fetch! I know if I had 100 Copper (or Bronze as they should be) 1943 Cents, I would not let the information out and I would only put a couple of them up for auction every year or so. Why would a Collector pay $100,000++ for a specific Variety of a coin, if they know that there are quite a few more that may hit the market within a few years and which will eventually lower their' value! It's my understanding that less than 40 are known to exist - from all 3 mints combined. I wonder if these 13 are new finds or some of the known ones. On the other hand, who would try to corner the market on them? Keep us posted.
Hmm, interesting, thanks for sharing. Will have to take of the sunglasses and watch what happens. :kewl: Phoenix
Well they have been listed... http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=1104&Lot_No=2245 is one of them. The other is on there as well.
My favorite dealer had one. He said it had the highest graded given (MS-61.) I didn't ask but he indicated it was a six figure coin. And I believe there are only about half as many as the '43 bronzes.
Actually, there are more than twice as many 1944 steel cents (35+) as there are 1943 bronze (17). Quoted from Heritage:
I really didn't want to go to that Rosemont show in April but now looks like I will just to see if there really are those Steel Cents.
Thanks Jim! I will try to keep an eye on them. Wouldn't it be nice to have a couple graded by PCGS as MS-68's?! That would get the Auction Floor aaa--rocking! Has there ever been a color designation set for Steel Cents since you can't call them Red, Red/Brown or Brown (oh, I guess you could, the dirty...rusrty ones )! If so, are the designations something like White, Silver/White, Gray or other? Frank
