I found a 2008 Monroe dollar clipped planchet error. My guess is about a 3.5/4% clip. Interesting in that the "S" in PLURIBUS did strike the right lip edge of the clip and slightly inside the clip, right on the corner. This coin also has a nother error. The lower, slightly left rim is slightly flattened. This may have also caused the edge to have a distinct sharp crease almost obliterating "TRUST". Anyone have any idea of value of this coin? I know it's very rare with the clip alone. I have not been able to find another one, but am aware that a few clipped Jefferson dollars were found. Thanks for your help.
Can you post a pic? I'm still trying to wrap my head around, "This coin also has a nother error. The lower, slightly left rim is slightly flattened. This may have also caused the edge to have a distinct sharp crease almost obliterating 'TRUST'."
2008 Monroe double error planchet clip Here is a few pics I hope. I can't get in focus close-ups of the "S" struck on edge of clip, and the line or strike on edge over "TRUST" but I think you will get the point. I appreciate your interest and help.
2008 Monroe error Another side view with another beside it lining up the edge printing, sorry not close enough in focus to see the "S" struck on right edge.
Not sure what the error gurus call it, but I believe that damage directly opposite the clip is typical of clipped coins, and results from the partial planchet unbalancing the force applied by the dies.
It is called "Blakesley effect". When a clipped planchet is struck there is no metal to be forced into the collar at the clip. Directly opposite the clip the forces on the metal at the collar are reduced due to the clip which results in weakness in the struck coin in this location. That is a cool find. Probably not worth a whole lot but cool none-the-less.
Yes, Blakesly Effect. More info can be found here: http://www.collectors-society.com/news/ViewArticle.aspx?IDArticle=312 Does it have "metal flow" at the edges of the clip? i.e., is the "ONR" of monroe trying to make a run for the border? By the way, Welcome to Cointalk! Edit to add: I'm still not sure what the cut is.
Well, I guess it has it all. Clipped planchet showing distinct cut and tear lines. What I would say is severe Blakesly effect, and indeed there is distortion of letters under the clipped area, therefore metal flow. Thank you gentlemen for you help. I appreciate it. Now I suppose although extremely rare, it's worth about ten bucks.
Well, clipped planchets are not in-and-of themselves rare. I don't know anything of the rarity of clipped prez bucks - and prez errors seem to be hot right now.
thats alot better of a clip then the one i found on a jefferson dollar I got from a roll. mine is a 10th the size of that clip. Nice find.
NICE!!!!! I found a teeny tiny clip on a sac dollar when WallMart was the only place giving them out. Yours is very nice!
Could be worth more than you think http://www.fredweinberg.com/inventory/item.asp?ID=5076 You could try e.mailing this guy ^ for advice on value. It's a pretty big clip, the more obvious the better as far as errors go I'd say. Depending on how rare they are in the Monroe's it could be worth a pretty penny. edited
I think they are both right. After the Plain Edge errors the mint has crack down on prez errors and not many will make it out. So the rarity of this coin may have a high price tag. I would have it sent in to be graded and then have it apprised. Good Luck and nice find.
Clips this large are hard to find on Presidential dollars. It is undoubtedly worth over $100, and perhaps as much as $300.
