I would probably grade it a 63 if it came by me. Kind of marky, but it has nice eye appeal. I suspect ngc called it a 63 star.
The obverse looks like AU58 or MS 60. The reverse looks like its much better at MS 62 or 63. I am still learning this grading stuff. I am taking a stab at this without my books in front of me. Would be interesting to see how close/off I am. :smile I was thinking that same thing Ben! I couldn't remember if that year was weakly struck or not, but I do remember reading that New Orleans many times tend to be weakly struck. That obviously changes the grade, but I am sticking with my original thought.
Scanned images frequently make coins look duller than they really are and the marks are magnified considerably by the images. Hence I will guess MS64 for the assigned grade.
I have to agree with the AU because of the hair line appears to have slight wear, unless as stated above that this is a common weak strike.
When trying to distinguish wear from weakness in strike it can be helpful to consider things such as the particular date/issue - this date Silver Dollar is typically softly struck - as well as other areas of the coin, for clues. I see no signs of circulation on the obverse and the reverse looks to be quite choice. If the coin had been circulated the reverse should show evidence of that, too. Yes, images can hide things like that, but considering all aspects of the coin which are visible, the images tell me we're seeing an uncirculated coin with some typical striking weakness.
Thanks for the comments. I'd tried taking a photo. It didn't come out well at all, so I didn't post it. No correct guesses yet.
I had a tooth pulled today and am starting to doze off from the meds. Before I fall asleep, I'll post the slab. It's in an "old" pre-star NGC holder. I think it looks MS63 in hand.
If/since the coin is graded MS62, perhaps in this case the scan didn't make it look duller than it actually is.
IMHO (very very amatuer opinion) that coin looks like it has a sweet chance at a 63 or better, if resubmitted. I think it looks pretty nice, nice coin. :thumb: Phoenix
I may very well be wrong, however, that cheek area and the base of the neck looks like a big ole finger print coming out... Again I am more than likely wrong, but I see those faint little brownish lines appearing..anyone else?? Beautiful coin!! RickieB
Good eye appeal both sides - a lot of wear on the obverse - hair & stars plus the die clash (neck) and reverse. Reverse very high 64 - great luster. I agree with the combined details for the grade and think you have a nice coin there.
I have a feeling if that fattie were resubmitted you would not get a 62 again. Nice coin, and thanks for sharing...Mike
