theres something i want to do but i figured i should ask since im still new to the hobby i just got my 1964 Kennedy half gold plated 24kt in the mail today i got it for free from littleton my quetion: should i try removing the plated gold(how would i do this?) or just leave it? stainless
i would leave it. the amount of gold on that coin is worth less then a dime.. maybe more, but not much. its not worth much more then the silver content.
What you have is a very nice novelty, 90% silver with a meager plating of gold. Removing the gold would be of no value since the amount of gold is so small and the process could seriously damage the coin. I would display it or turn it into jewelery of some sort. In short have FUN with it!! Allen
I too think you should leave it alone. Carry it around and show people for fun. Tell them it's pure Gold and watch the look on thier faces now that Gold is so high in value. I just hope your not involved with Littleton sending you all kinds of stuff. Watch out for that place. So how did you get it free????????
Free is exactly what I'd be willing to pay. Nice novelty though and at least worth silver melt. I'd leave it alone; anything you try to do to it can only make it worse. BTW I hope you're not actually paying for anything from Littleton Coin. They don't exactly have a great reputation around here lol...
Treat it as a bullion coin, which is what it is now. It doesn't have any numismatic value, but it isn't worthless either.
Hold it in your hands, get fingerprints all over it, roll around on it, use it to scratch that hard to reach area on your back, etc., etc. You probably will never get the chance to do these sorts of things guilt free with a "collector" coin again.
I learned the hard way, Littleton is maybe good for supplies... BUT NOT COINS!!! I just put in an order with a new internet connection for 21 coins... Did some comparison and found that if I had bought them from littelton it would have cost me $200.00 dollars more!!! Or two thirds more than they were worth... That other stuff, ie. the gold plated and such I had already stayed away from... Just keep researching and looking around. There are better, BETTER, buys out there to sink your hard earned cash into! :thumb:
yeah.they send it with that on-approval thing...just get the free stuff, send the other coins back and cancel it right away... i was gonna do the on approval this time......that is until i found that they wanted $5 for a average circulated 1943 nickle...are you kidding me? thanks for the advice...i guess i will just leave it
It is possible to remove the gold plating, that is if you don't mind ruining the layer underneath it. Don't bother, gold plating technology has advanced so much that if you used real gold, you can plate it at 0.003 microns, which is less than 0.001gram of gold, well that isn't worth a lot of money even with today's high gold price. Chances are, it's a gold alloy so it's worth even less. Just spend it.
I can't agree on the scratching the back with that coin though. It will not reach. I've tried and it just won't reach.
yes It is possible, just not w/o harming the coin. Sandpaper, wear, and aqua regia will do it. BTW, I have a plating machine.
It is a novelty item that also happens to contain $7 worth of silver. I suggest you house it in a 2x2 cardboard flip and write 1964 Kennedy 24K Gold Plated on the flip. One day you can turn around and sell it some yahoo on Ebay for a buck or two more than it's really worth because it's something different.
