Good morning folks. A friend of mine asked me to try and get an answer from you's guy's about this 1972 Mint Set that has an additional cent in it. It's a 1972 Philadelphia 5 coin mint set that also has an "S" minted cent thrown in. From other pics I've seen trying to research this, there seems to be quite a few mint sets that have that extra penny in there. Also, I've been trying to upload the pics I have of it, but it keeps saying that it's not an allowed extension. Ive pulled up the pic I have to see what the extension is, and it says it's a Jpg. The style or type I think it said it was a Rich style? Does that sound familiar to anyone? Ok thanks in advance. Foo out.
@FooFighter - look on your computer and copy the name of the file you're trying to upload and post it here for me to see. That will provide the answer. If it's a JPG file, the extension at the end of the file name should be one of these - .jpg , .jpeg , .jpe , .jfif
RTF - stands for Rich Text Format. It's not a graphic file format, it's a document format (like Word's .doc). It might have an image in it, might have nothing but that image, but it's not an image file... Best cheat is to open both CT and the .rtf at the same time. Highlight the image in the rft file, right click and choose copy. Click over into the CT response form and right-click paste. That will "magically" upload the image to CT's servers and add it to your message, so when you click "Post Reply" below you will see the image (until it's posted you'll see a tag for the image).
Ok cool thanx guys. I really miss having access to a normal computer. It's difficult doing what I have to on a cell. It's a Samsung LG Rebel. The tablet is a little easier, but alas, it doesn't have all the bells and whistles. Going to try to upload it here, but have to update Google Photos 1st. This is what I got when I did a "copy link" then pasted it here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/2dXaMkmJArneZi9c7 If I investigated more I ended up with this: /storage/emulated/o/Pictures/messages/IMG_2019 Other details 0419_011457_01.jpg 4.4MP 1470x3024 1.1MB
Well lookie there.! That's what I've been trying to do for 2 days now. Let me know if it works or not. Thank you Foo
Well if nothing else you've got me wondering if I am - drinking that is ! In any event, given the turn of events, I've moved this back to Coin Chat because, well, you've now changed the question you're asking. I'm assuming this is what you really want to know about ? I first considered a strikethrough, but it looks to me like whatever that is, it is raised on the coin and not incuse. Sometimes your eyes can play tricks on you and make incuse look raised and raised look incuse, but if you look at the lower right corner of the "strap" on the shoulder it's pretty easy to see that it is raised. So that would rule out a strikethrough. That means that the die itself was damaged by a strikethrough, I'm gonna guess it was a feeder finger that got bent during one or more strikes, and when a subsequent coin was struck - this is the result, a raised strap like image superimposed on the coin. Now that doesn't explain why the extra cent was added to the set instead of the regular token, but I don't think that was what prompted your post anyway. As I said above, I assume what you really wanted to know was what that was and how it happened. Anyway, what I've said is my best guess.
This is how they packaged mint sets in the early 1970s. There was one pack with all five Philadelphia coins plus the San Francisco cent, and another pack with the Denver coins and a token.
Yeah, but since he said it was an "extra cent", I was assuming there was an S in the other package as well. In other words, no package with a token. Could be wrong though because as I said - that was an assumption. Care to answer that question Foo ?
WOW wasn't that an interesting chain of events?!? I ALMOST got mad when I looked down and saw the picture had actually uploaded. But Nana was right, about most things I assure you. Anger is a waste of time and energy. I'd have to hire some computer forensics team to figure out how it all came down. Lol but I really dont care! OK on with the show. Thank you SO MUCH for all the he GDJMSP. May I call you GD? Ok let me know. .::::::: I am totaly intimidated by this guy. Lol Ok, on with the show. My friend is the owner of this Mint Set. This is the same friend who is selling all of his Morgans. He has a number of these Mint Sets , in different years and they are all in such great shape. I really like the way they are packaged in those flat clear plastic pouches that are then sealed giving each coin it's own compartment. I'll check later when I go back over, but I remember seeing an assortment of wooden tokens and plastic tokens that stated the year and mint. Other times it would only be a fancy colorful sticker. I'll shoot another post later. Thanks again,,,,,,, Foo Here's another pic of the S mint with whatever damage it turns out to be. I will also run my finger over the obverse, outside the plastic abviously, to see if I can tell if the strap marks are indeed raised.https://photos.app.goo.gl/4WRfpipWt9xzsJjMA I'll check bAck and see if this helps. Foo out
This is a better pic of the P mint cent and her damage. I'm sure my friends at CT will figure out what caused the damage, and could probably go to the mint IN PERSON, and fix the issue before I could even get home from work! Lol I certainly wouldn't bet AGAINST you guys! don't know how such a sharp point would have been formed
That one's easy, a piece of finning that has broken loose on one end is the likely cause. Finning results from a few different causes. It can be a planchet is too thick or part of it is, die spacing is too close, or strike pressure is too high. But when it occurs, a tiny thin sliver of metal is forced up between the dies and the collar at strike. Usually, the fin or fins will get bent over flat against the coin's rim during the normal process of the coin being in the hopper, bagging, or packaging in some cases. And if it remains until released into circulation it'll happen quickly then. Or, it may even break completely off. But, it doesn't always get flattened out. On some coins it survives, and on some one end can break loose from attachment due to it flexing from contact with something. And when only one end remains attached - you get what ya see in that pic.
Nahhhhh - you only thought ya were. Ya see, now ..... Devil made me do it, I swear he did As for what to call me, oh good lord, pretty much every name in the book has been used before - depending of course on who it was. And, my user name, well that's my initials, yup I got 6 names - long story trust me. But most folks, well most folks just call me Doug edit - and you do realize I just make all this stuff up - don't ya ? I mean ask anybody, there's LOTS of folks that'll swear that I do. 'Course they're the ones using all those other names I mentioned
Ok we need to talk about this getting signed off while youre writing this heart felt note of gratitude. Some times it will leave me alone. It really only depends on 1 thing. Lol its evil if you think about it. Just like it is with our beloved coins. We,,,,, well I do anyways, spend hours or even days if we want to seperate our coins down to the year, or MM. Or if you don't have a life like me, or have the God Awful OCD! !! Then you might make a mistake and accidentally drop say, a single 1992 into a bucket of 1999s!!! Uhm, you have to get it right? Well the law of averages is ALWAYS working against me. WHY CANT IT BE THE 3RD OR 4TH COIN YOU PULL OUT!?!? NOOOOOOOO if there are 1,000 coins in that bucket, it will more than likely be # 995 or even #999!!! I know,,, I do it regularly! LMAO ok I'm done RANTING. So, oh yea, if I only have 2 sentences or just 1 paragraph, this will keep me signed in till the cows come home. BUUUTTTT, if it was 5 or 6 paragraphs, and i had hit some really great points that i hadn't counted on, well guess what? This sucker is gonna need me to sign back in, AND I will end up loosing the whole conglomerate of letters, that I put together so carefuly to form these words! LMAO you gotta love it! So any tips would be much appreciated. I'm pretty sure that I had checked the box marked "stay signed on", if there is one. There has to be a way save a draft or something right? Hope everyone has a great weekend Later Foo out That's pretty smart there BS. I MEAN that's a great idea BSiii
Ok well, thank you for all the help and all the brain power there paddyman.I would have never gotten it done without your help and guidance.I also want to offer a hardy hand shake and a thank you to idhair, Willie Boyd, BSiii and JeffB. I'd become a member of The Church of the SubGenius if only they published where to send your money and I remembered to sign up...
Yah know, the only people I know with six names are the British royal family. Is it Sir Doug or HRJ Doug
