Hello I recently read a post from another forum talking about the $5 star from NY (B) and Richmond (E) Banks. It seems these are very difficult to obtain. Do any of you know anything about these or even better do you have one?
I've not heard of these stars in particular and don't have any to speak of but they do stand out in the series report from USPaperMoney for this denomination. If you want to know of an extreme rarity, take a look at $1 1981 notes from the J-D block. Over three million were printed but none are known to exist. The primary reason cited is that contemporary collectors just didn't care or know to keep a look out for them and save them being they were a regular block and not a star. While unlikely, it's possible a few are out there somewhere waiting to be found, spent, or discovered so if you ever find one you've scored something big and unique.
Seven districts out of twelve had star notes printed for the series 1985 $5 denomination, with New York & Richmond having the lowest numbers printed. Fr.1978-B* and Fr.1978-E* show up in PMG’s population report so there are some out there, but very few.
Wow! You have the Holy Grail of modern $1 notes and in CU condition at that. Surely there must hopefully be more out there that have yet to be discovered.
The book value mimics the auction estimate (around $1,500). The note did not reach the sellers reserve and did not sell. Later, I was contacted by the auction company and as asked if I was still interested at $1,100....I said yes, and that’s how I ended up with it.
