Hi everyone, just wanted to introduce myself and share an interesting coin I got at the last Leu auction...I figured it would be a good coin for my first post here. I love the portraits of both emperors. Alexandria. Nero, with Tiberius, 54-68- (Tetradrachm, 13.54 g), RY 13 = 66/7. Looking forward to sharing more coins with you all.
Great looking coin! I only have 1 coin with 2 emperors. I haven't been able to ID it yet though so I won't bother posting. Welcome, btw
This is a possible explanation taken from a similar coin on wildwinds : “The obverse is called Tiberius in the above references. Indeed the legend is that of Tiberius. However, there are no other coins of Tiberius and Nero. At the time of Nero, Tiberius had largely been labeled average. He was not deified like Augustus or Claudius. The full name of Claudius was Tiberius Claudius Drusus Nero Germanicus Caesar, but he was styled Tiberius Claudius Caesar on coinage, sometimes abbreviated. Coins with Claudius and Nero on them are common. Perhaps the obverse was intended to show Claudius.”
Some of them are, in particular the drachms and tetradrachms. The denarii however, are a different kettle of fish so to speak. Here is a denarius of Claudius with Nero as Caesar. Great coin @Shea19 None of either in the collection for me yet so I'll just admire yours. I really like the Alexandrian coinage and have been adding a few slowly, but surely.
Nice coin! Nero's coinage feature Augustus, Tiberius and Claudius, especially early in his reign. Obviously he left out Gaius (Caligula). He's showing that he is a part of the Julio-Claudian clan and is worthy of the purple. He also commemorated the battle of Actium and included divinities among other things on his Alexandrian tetradrachms.
