In this series of Titus with the pulvinar and the triangular frame different numbers of palmettes appear on the reverse. It can be 3, 5, or 9. This one has 5. However, this coin comes in 2 sub varieties, with the lituus under the frame and without. As you can see there is a lituus under the frame. @David Atherton has one of these and contacted Ted Buttrey. This coin has been assigned 124A in the upcoming addenda to RIC II. All of the lituus varieties are rarer than the non lituus varieties. I also have the lituus variety for the 9 palmettes version. Also, I have the non lituus and lituus varieties for Domitian. Please post your coins of Titus. TITUS Auguste (79-81), AR denier, 80, Rome. D/ IMP TITVS CAES VESPASIAN AVG PM· T. l. à d. Glad to hear it arrived safe and sound! The inclusion of the lituus lends credence to these types being pulvinaria commemorating a religious ceremony. The million dollar question is what ceremony? Appeasement to the gods after the Vesuvian disaster, or for a more celebratory event - the opening games of the Colosseum? A clue perhaps lies with the same types found on RR coins and those struck later in the 2nd century. For what purposes were they issued?

Interesting write-up and nice examples. I have a cruddy one I am not entirely convinced is genuine - darkish and lightweight. I'm not sure if those are palmettes or something else (flames? - the one at the peak has a palmette-look, I think): Titus Denarius (80 A.D.)
