I liked him, in general, but he, as do others on this site, seem to have difficulty understanding the concept of discretion. Yes, many new collectors and the uninitiated come to this site with coin questions and often they are given unwarranted and unnecessary snark right from the beginning. Just because you're tired of hearing the same completely uniformed questions again and again doesn't mean you should be snarky and sassy right out of the gate. This is an internet discussion forum and you are under no obligation to reply to anything posted here. In my opinion, the banning is directly a result of a combination of the above lack of discretion, two strong willed posters butting heads and it getting completely out of control. Just be cool.
I would like to think that it was a compliment. It all depends if you are right or just throwing your size and weight around. If it is the latter. I would have gladly called you out on BS, and done so to your face. It really boils down to the bigger you are the harder you fall. Your size doesn't mean that you can automatically back up your words.
I would just like to say that if I got in a fight it was in defense, and mostly in defense of others, even folks that I didn't know. I never intentionally went out looking for one. Just the way I was taught, and there were many a big guy that thought their size was a right to offend or use negatively. Anyways carry on Ya'll.
And do you know what’s wrong with the nonsense you always come back with, Doug? You’re seeing what YOU want to and only what YOU want to. I couldn’t care less how your run your forum, but do take issue with the fact you insist upon treating everyone as if utter fools on this one issue. I hate to burst your bubble, but you’re human, Doug, and are prone to the same failings and biases we all are, yet as if by magic you seem capable only of seeing it in others. You do what you’re going to do regardless, yet still insist upon incessantly spewing ridiculousness like the below instead of simply owning it. Who are you really trying to convince with this nonsense, Doug? The greater forum or yourself? This is what I mean. Pretending to be some grand old sage capable of inhuman objectivity changes nothing, nor should it take “long periods of time” to train people in what should be largely common sense. We’re talking about moderating a coin forum, not brain surgery. No offense, but if someone can’t figure out the basics of “fairness, equality, and making just decisions” in 10-15 minutes, perhaps the job isn’t for them. That said, does anyone here honestly believe some alt troll would be allowed to remain an active member if they showed up using Doug’s or Gemmy’s halloween avatar as Kurt’s was, attacking them in the same manner, and for no other purpose than intentionally causing trouble?
So Kurt was "entrapped"? That is, he would not have broken the "law" had someone not tempted him? Kind of like a prostituion or drug sting put on by the police?
So thinking along this line because the baitor was not banned can we assume that that persona was part of the establishment? If not part of the establishment then why would not the baitor be punished as well? And maybe he was given "points", but because his point level has not risen to the level of banning perhaps that is why the baitor is still active.
Unfortunately, only the staff can access the area where Doug gives his guidance as to how the forum will run as the Admin/owner wants it to be run. It is provided by their money and efforts and the appreciated supporters, so they make the rules, they can over ride mods decisions, (very common when mods are new until they learn) until they have what they want. The idea of a rogue mod is very humorous as such would only exist until noticed by the admins and then no longer be a mod. It seems simple...The admins set the rules and tone of enforcement, the mods have to follow it, if the members do not like it and try to change it, they should start their own forum or go to a forum which allows everything to go ( and they might not like it as they would not be the vociferous one there ). Peter has provided a wonderful forum for numismatics , and he wanted it to comfortable for all, and some members are on every day answering the same questions over and over, knowing only 1/100 if lucky will stay and learn, but their efforts are the engine of the forum. Others just come for the drama and conflict like cheering in a bull fight, and they are not wanted as they do not fulfill the philosophy of the forum. No one got a bum deal on this current issue, despite the conspiracy theories that people like to have and hold dearly. Without Peter and Doug, this forum would not be here, I do not see the rules or way it is run changing, nor would I want them to change. ( My opinion only, not speaking for the forum itself) Jim
For the record I dont think there was a rogue mod or that anyone planned to bait Kurt to get him banned. I think both parties received points and the one party's prior accumulation of infractions/points caused the result. The other party had no prior history so is still "active". I don't think there was premeditation but in the end it played out the way it did and some folks like a good conspiracy so read it the way they want.
It stuns me when I think about the fact that I am looking at being sixty years old in just a few months. Just two weeks ago in my mind, I was a 25 year old rock star.... Man, the time we get to dedicate to our passions is just so dadgum short and fleeting. Who needs divisiveness and drama? I have a new eight year old daughter in my house. I got all the drama I need. I hope these guys in charge will continue to keep us over the hill prima-donnas in line. Lord knows, I ain’t here for the drama. I’m here for the coins.
Gosh Randy , 60 is still young! I would love to go back that far....but life has turned out fairly good so I wouldn't take the chance over again. Play the cards I was dealt and enjoy it! Hope your daughter joins with you in collecting! If she gets the urge to collect, let me know! Jim
Kurt sends his love, or more precisely, "Hey Burton, if you like, you can pass along this to CoinTalk, from me" From the very moment I arrived on CoinTalk, I was already a committed dissident over the very philosophy of their site. We were a crummy fit from Day 1. What CoinTalk is about, philosophically, is something I have never cared about, and actually, I find annoying. We are both better without each other’s influence; both me and CoinTalk. Such as: 1) Promoting online numismatics 2) ANA bashing misinformation 3) Photography (coin porn) centrism 4) Mollycoddling beginners using vets for “free” expertise So I guess it's a mutually agreeable divorce. With no kids so you don't have to still pretend to like each other.
Yeah CoinCorgi that was about my take... Not quite "if he ever steps in front of my car there won't even be skid marks", but definitely not "oh, he still on my Christmas card list". Although I do know some people who send Christmas cards in the hopes that someday it will get returned "undeliverable - deceased".
Kurt says if he misses an ANA show, he's very ill. If he misses two, look for an obit. The registration/messaging desk can always find him. In Pittsburgh he was doing dealer mug shots
Elitist views such as his are what I have never cared for in this hobby and I find really annoying. I'm glad he's in his happy place.
Right on VKB! I hope I never sent you the message that I disliked your involvement around here. Your statements about all the topics you discussed gave thought to many of us here. Thank you for the time well spent. I still remember the day that you went on a tirade about socialistic America and started to put down blue collar America. You remember what I said? I still hold true to my position, but I feel your passion for the numismatic community, And I think that if you were let back depending on your sentence. You could be a great influence here. If we never see you again, Thanks for taking a place among those that I learned from even if some others couldn't relate to your views. Phil C.
I take offense to that. My first name sucks. That’s why I go by my middle name William. But on checks and official business it’s E William
