The news just broke around an hour ago. It is very saddening, especially since I never got to visit. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/04/15/world/europe/notre-dame-fire.html This is my only picture of the Cathedral, taken from the Eiffel Tower. Construction on the Cathedral began under King Louis VII. Here is a Parisian denier struck during his reign. Feel free to post your Parisian coins or anything related.
I don't think its actually destroyed at the moment, so far the spire has collapsed. Almost guaranteed the French are going to do "restoration work", that could mean anything from building a new spire, to a total reconstruction. Still a great loss of historical importance.
I am glad I had the chance to visit. It was a day I will never forget. Such an incredible building. I hope it is not a total loss. Here is another coin type of Louis VII. Yes, it is my coin.
I did, about an hour ago. https://www.cointalk.com/threads/historic-notre-dame-cathedral-burning-out-of-control.337131/ According to Fox News, it appears that the entire wooden structure for the whole interior will be lost. Chris
It's such a shame. To survive as long as it has, and to survive things like a World War... I was there two months ago and stayed right across the street with a lovely view of it. I'm glad at least my kids got to see it as it was. I am sure it will take decades and maybe much more to restore it.
Very Sad, I had the pleasure of visiting in the millennial year. FRANCE, Provincial. Lorraine (duché). Thiébaud II. 1303-1312. AR Double Denier (17mm, 1.02 g, 3h). Nancy mint. I am absolutely horrified. I have been to this building twice and I really liked to spend time there. It was quiet ( more or less) dark and the eye always seemed to find a place that was beautiful. This is a very sad day
The river "Seine" is just a few yards beside the cathedral. Its waters couldn't do much to save It. Shall be rebuilt and restored to look better than before.
History and culture do matter to people. When it is destroyed either through accident or design it can be quite devastating. https://twitter.com/i/status/1117868382785802242
It is indeed a tragedy Notre Dame is (was) one of the most visited place in Paris, together with the tour Eiffel The last picture I've taken of it, six months ago, while visiting my son in Paris Q
Denier of Odo (888-898), who defended the Île de la Cité against the Vikings, and moved the French capital to Paris.
One of my favorite sites visited. Been there a few times, once over Christmas. I am heart-sick over this travesty. I am very saddened. A tragedy! It survived many wars. All of those beautiful stained glass windows were likely destroyed. I visited the cathedral in the 1970's and was in awe of it's grandeur. The thought of it makes me feel ill.
