I bought two rolls of pennies off of ebay. There were a roll of 1944d and 19944s. I was going through them looking for a d over s but these caught my eye. Why are the mint marks on both these coins sooo close to the date. The other cents in this roll are much further away from the date. Are these considered errors? and if not what are they? The Very top pic and the one below it are the coins in question. The other pics are of the 1944 but the mint marks are clearly different.

Nope. Not errors - just punched close. All mint marks used to be punched by hand - With a mallet and a punch - into the working dies.

If your taking the time to examine MMs for OMMs, have you checked for the other varieties? http://www.coppercoins.com/advsearch.php
