This Morgan with a PCGS price guide of $65 just sold for $148. This is also a WOW! list Morgan with the die cracks and breaks all over the obverse. I hesitated for a solid week but I feel the premium was still just too high.
The toning is admittedly very terminal, but I would have still paid $150 for it. That's an easy $200 on GC or Heritage.
I would have grabbed that one! It has another nice displaced die break between UN of UNUM that is not listed on the 25a.
The toning is really nice, but i wouldn't pay that much of a premium for it. My reasoning is that toning is ephemeral, and even though I like some toning, it's something that happened to the coin after striking, vs a characteristic of striking. Just my humble opinion. I'd pay a little more than the price guide says, but not $148.
I will pay for premiums toning; this particular coin is not one I would pay a premium for. This thread is a great example of how subjective eye appeal is on toned coins.
I thought that would be a big deal but there are two coins imaged on that site and even though it's not listed it appears on one of them. But the die breaks are part of why I liked this coin. The toning was just a bonus. Im mostly sad it wasn't in my price range because I can't find any more 25a and it would've been a nice example of tone and VAM. In the end, I don't think it would've been worth it to me even knowing most find it a fair price.
I agree, I think I was mostly drawn to the VAM. If I can find a 25a with attractive toning I'd pay $150 but this just wasn't quite there, hence all my hesitation lol
