I been much intrigued by this program coming up week after next. It’s the kind of thing that makes me love our hobby. So I figure I’ll do a little participating on my own and dump the odds and ends below back into circulation next week in hopes that one or two of these may light a numismatic fire in some youngster somewhere..... Anyone else sending any goodies back into the wild for the Great American Coin Hunt?
I sneak them in the till at work and mix it in folks change. Less than %10 of people even look to see what they've just been handed.
I just received 3 silver quarters in change ordering a bagel, and got 3 more ordering a coffee right after. I bet there was a whole roll in the drawer, and rather then cleaning them out, I left the rest. Thats about as far as I will go with it though.
that's got to be hard to do ! I know I know love my old coin finds , but I can see why . definitely have some stuff i could do without , good idea , keeps it alive!
I would love to participate but I will not release older coins that are in decent condition back into circulation. Too many times I've found what otherwise would have been a nice coin to have been run over in a parking lot, nicked and beat. A lot of coins get thrown away and end up in the dump. One time in my working days at a casino I found a Ziploc bag of cents just thrown away like nothing. It even contained a couple of wheats. Then folded into receipts that were thrown away outside of the casino's mini-mart I'd often find quarters and other denominations of coins. So it is a noble endeavor but the outcomes for such coins can be quite bleak.
I'll probably spend some of my partial-date Buffalo nickels, since I've learned that selling them on eBay won't earn you anything. (I originally bought 100 of 'em to go through with my daughter for her album. Now there about 50 left over that haven't been saved for the album or sold.) I regularly get dollar coins from my bank and spend them into circulation. Finally, my "kid stash" of coins that I picked up from my parents a few months back has some things that aren't really worth much, if anything over face. A circulated Eisenhower, an AU 1977 Kennedy, etc. They have sentimental value, but I've got other, nicer stuff in that stash, so it won't be a big loss.
Back during that short time frame when one could purchase, from the mint, rolls of dollar coins at cost (and free shipping) I would purchase $300 or so, and spend it into circulation. Somebody once helped clean our house for $75 and we paid her with it -- she loved it. Not all, but many of the recipients enjoyed receiving them.
I could go get a book of $2 from the bank, they always through the newer kids off, some even got managers claiming them to be counterfeit prior.
My buddy in Colorado supplements his income by tending bar at a pizza parlor part-time. We grew up together and were both collectors as kids. Last night he sent me a picture of this tip he got on a $14 tab... It's not April 21st yet but I'm guessing the game is afoot...
I received a 47 Jefferson nickel in my change today. The heck of it is..... When the GACH was in full swing, one of the coins I released into circulation was a 47 nickel...... I wonder....
