First coin in what way? That I ever had? Don't know, but probably a cent for the gumball machine. That got me started collecting? 1917 Type 1 quarter. That I bought for more than face? 1797 large cent.
My first old coin was an 1838 half dime. I was 11 years old when I bought it from my mother's cleaning lady in the spring of 1960. What really grabbed me was the fact that it was just not 100 years old, it was decades older than that! I still have it. It look bad today partly because of poor storage and cleaning.
I didn't really have a "first coin" - when I was a mere tyke I pulled just about every denomination from circulation, halves included, and forced them into those blue cardboard Whitman albums. Then buying power won out over collecting and I pulled everything out except the cents. It was all pocket change, after all. I still have that same cent album and I try to add to it from circulation every year, which has become more difficult in the past five or so years. Sometime after that I think I came across old worn Liberty Nickels or Mercury dimes, probably given to me by various relatives, but I have no idea which particular one came first.
Mine would have been a group of Lincoln cents but it's been too long to remember. They went in a Whitman folder. Still have that collection after 50 something years. When I was about 13, the bad guys took all of my collection but left that one folder. Looking back, I feel really lucky.
A well circulated Indian Head cent in roughly 1954. Do not know the date, but probably still have it. My grandfather and grandmother owned a country store. They encouraged me to look through the coins. That continued for several years and gave me the opportunity to fill coin albums..fond memories.
1917-S Lincoln Cent, from the Aptos, California Post Office, early 1960's. I had saved it, but cannot find it now.
A 1922 Peace Silver Dollar That I bought from a kid in an old country store that was going to buy candy with, about 25 years ago.
I was around 10 and my dad gave me his Whitman coin folder with pennies. He only collected from circulation, but it completely fascinated me. Included was a 1909 VDB. Not great shape, but, hey, after I learned a bit, I was thrilled!
The 1880 Morgan dollar the Kennedy half and the Franklin half dollar that my grandmother gave me were my first coins that got me going and that's all I had too felt great too having a Morgan. Now I have loads of collection in coins. I feel so proud.
